Good Day For ‘Good Trouble’: House Passes John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

I watched the House debate on HR 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It was infuriating to watch many of the 137 Sedition Party members who aided and abetted the MAGA/QAnon insurrection on January 6 (some of whom may have been coconspirators), defend the Big Lie, deny that dozens of new voting restrictions in the states are not GQP Jim Crow 2.0 voter suppression laws, and decry this bill as an attack on American democracy.

Are you fucking kidding me? The Sedition Party, the Party of the Big Lie, is in no position to lecture anyone about an attack on American democracy. They are guilty as charged.

Sedition Party members falsely claimed that HR 4 is a Democratic “power grab” – ironically echoing the “states rights” code language of Southern segregationists in the Jim Crow era during the debate of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Congress has the constitutional authority to regulate elections, particularly when states are violating the fundamental right to vote of their citizens in violation of the 14th and 15th Amendments.

As you might expect, HR 4 passed on a party-line vote of 220-212 (one late vote corrected). Nancy Pelosi did not lose a single Democrat today.

The anti-democracy Sedition Party is not interested in saving American democracy by securing voting rights for all Americans. Not a single Republican voted in favor of voting rights, a far cry from the Republican vote on the Voting Rights Act in 1965. They have abandoned democracy.

Democrats are going to have to do the heavy lifting by themselves to save American democracy, and to secure fundamental voting rights for all Americans.

The House has done its job passing HR 1, the For The People Act, and now HR 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The onus is now squarely on the undemocratic Senate.

It is time for prima donna diva Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, and maybe another eight cowardly Democratic senators hiding behind these divas, to stop defending the Jim Crow relic Senate filibuster rule and to reform or repeal the filibuster rule in order to save American democracy and to secure fundamental voting rights for all Americans.

What more evidence do they need need to see that no Republican is going to vote for any version of a voting rights bill. The House just proved it. These delusional Democratic divas need to pull their heads out of their ass.

If these damn prima donna divas say, “Oh well, there is nothing we can do because we are not going to change the Senate filibuster rule,” they are the modern-day equivalent of Neville Chamberlain appeasing ultimate evil out of craven cowardice.

The Sedition Party, the Party of the Big Lie, wants to end American democracy and to replace it with GQP authoritarianism, a permanent tyranny of the minority in which elections no longer matter, they will decide who won a Soviet-style sham election (obviously, it will always be the Sedition Party candidate).

Any Democrat who aids and abets this authoritarian tyranny needs to be considered a traitor to their country, like Benedict Arnold. “Whose side are you on?”

The die is now cast. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has scheduled voting rights legislation in the Senate when it returns in September. It is now a do or die moment of truth for American democracy.

Call Senator Sinema’s office every day and demand that she drop her historically ignorant and indefensible support for the Senate filibuster rule and either reform it, so that it is no longer a “coward’s filibuster,” or repeal it, and pass the For The People Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Right Advancement Act with just Democratic votes, because that is all you can count on.
