Governor Katie Hobbs Reacts To Republicans Unconstitutional Power Grab on the Budget

As Az Blue Meanie and other statewide and local media outlets have reported, Extremist MAGA Republicans still want the political sandbox all to themselves when it comes to governing and legislating.

Even if it goes against the Arizona Constitution which clearly gives the Governor the veto power and a hand in helping to shape fiscal (all)policy.

Last week, MAGA Republicans passed a resolution in the State Senate that would ask voters in 2024 to cut the Governor out of the budget process if the State Legislature passes one and the Governor vetoes it.

It is amazing how MAGA Republicans like voters to get involved in passing ballot measures that take away rights, make it harder to raise taxes, and circumvent the Constitution and ignore them when it comes to fully funding public education (Invest in Ed,)  and curtailing the number of private school giveaways rich families can apply for.

Reacting to the Republican Unconstitutional power play, Governor Hobbs relayed through her press office:

“There is no excuse to resort to that at this point. The legislature’s one duty is to pass a budget for the people of Arizona. Both parties were able to come together to pass the AEL and there’s no reason why the same can’t happen for the budget. It’s time we stop kicking the can down the road and work on a budget that moves Arizona forward.”

Governor Hobbs is right.

It is time for both sides to take the adult approach, come together, compromise, and pass a bipartisan budget that solves problems,  moves the Grand Canyon state forward, and helps lift all Arizonans up.

Governor Hobbs sent a letter to Republican Speaker Ben Toma and Senate President Warren Peterson on February 16, 2023, inviting them to “seriously discuss the budget.”

It is time they seriously responded to the invitation, meet with the Governor, and put all Arizonans first instead of their MAGA base.
