Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes both tackled the issue of immigration yesterday (January 15, 2025.)
The Governor, according to an office press release, “announced $17.2 million in funding from the SAFE (Stopping Arizona’s Fentanyl Epidemic) initiative to support local law enforcement’s border security work, drug interdiction efforts, and combatting human trafficking.”
Commenting on the funding in the release, Governor Hobbs stated:
“Our law enforcement officers play a critical role in securing our border and keeping Arizonans safe. By working together, we can stop dangerous drugs from harming our communities, assist those struggling with addiction, and ensure our officers have the tools they need to succeed. I’m proud to deliver this funding to local law enforcement to secure the border.”
Meanwhile, at the Arizona Attorney Generals Office, Ms. Mayes, responding to the likely coming draconian anti-immigration measures from the incoming Trump/Vance Administration, has partnered with 13 other state Attorney Generals from New Jersey, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, and Vermont to “defend health insurance access for Dreamers from court challenges.”
Commenting in an office press release, Attorney General Mayes wrote:
“The incoming administration’s apparent decision to abandon the defense of this rule is not just wrong—it’s harmful. Denying Dreamers the ability to purchase affordable health insurance hurts public health, drives up costs for everyone, and undermines the contributions these individuals make to our communities. Arizona will not stand by while an essential lifeline for thousands is stripped away. We are stepping in to defend what the federal government won’t—basic fairness and access to healthcare.”

It is interesting that the Governor is silent on the use of the SAFE money for apprehending illegal border crossers. She mentions fentanyl and human smugglers but not illegal crossers. Do you think that omission was intentional or accidental?
Gee Johnny Boy, don’t think anyone here is going to answer any of your loaded so-called “gotcha” questions until you answer the valid ones directed at you. Like for instance, the rampant fraud, waste & abuse in the ESA program that you were & are more than happy to support.
John Government Checks Kavanagh asked:
“She mentions fentanyl and human smugglers but not illegal crossers”
Who do you think the human smugglers are smuggling, Johnny boy?
I mean, it’s right there in the name, “human” smugglers.
Another day, another embarrassing comment on the World Wide Web from Arizona’s own really smart blog-troll to add to the huge pile of JGCK embarrassing comments.
Gonna’ need to put in a PO for a bigger pile.
Sorry, I’ve been informed we cannot afford a bigger embarrassing comments pile for John Government Checks Kavanagh’s embarrassing comments because all the money was stolen by well do do folks who don’t need the money in the ESA program he supports.
Speaking of well to do folks, how did a guy getting government checks all his life afford to buy a fancy electric car, the one he was bragging about the other day?
Hmmm.
You should probably know already that SAFE stands for Stopping Arizona’s Fentanyl Epidemic, Johnny Jester. That money is to assist local law enforcement to interdict drug trafficking, not to interdict or detain unauthorized immigrants crossing the border. So, I’m guessing the ‘omission’ is simply a product of the fact that the SAFE money is NOT for that purpose. So the real question, Johnny, is, “are you totally pig-ignorant, or are you a jingoistic xenophobe trying to score points with your rabidly anti-immigrant base?”
She did not just say fentanyl. She mentioned human trafficking also, so who not illegal entrants? Michael, maybe you are the ignorant one or a spin master.
@ Sen. Kavanagh –
What is worse for you? Fear of the Other or Fear of ESA accountability?
I’m guessing that you’re hoping that fear of people with skin darker than a golfer’s tan will distract from misusing public funds.
Maybe you’re simply hoping that bigotry is more of an imperative for most folks than any expectation that “public servants” represent the public interest
