Hobbs, Gallego, Romero, and Giles Celebrate Earth Day

Arizona’s Governor and Mayors of the Grand Canyon State’s three largest cities took time to honor and celebrate Earth Day yesterday (April 22, 2023.)

Earth Day has been celebrated since the bipartisan actions of Republicans and Democrats (notably Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson) during the Nixon Administration strongly reacted to a series of environmental disasters in the United States including the 1969 oil spill off the Santa Barbara coast in California. These actions included the formation of Earth Day, the passage of the National Environmental Policy, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, and other measures designed to protect clean water, clean air, animals, and humanity.

Again, remember all these progressive pro-environmental measures that happened during the Republican Nixon Administration.

Times have changed if one looks at most members of the former Party of Lincoln.

In Arizona this year, leading voices for a greener sustainable future from both parties took time to honor and celebrate Earth Day.

Governor Katie Hobbs posted:

Phoenix and Tucson Mayors Kate Gallego and Regina Romero, two leaders in local greener sustainability efforts, also participated in several events to commemorate Earth Day.

Mayor Gallego posted:

Earlier in the week, the Mayor reacted to news about Phoenix being ranked 14th in the country on Eco-Forwardness by Opendoor Reality, stating:

“Phoenix is proud to be named an eco-forward city. For years, we have prioritized growing our city in a climate-conscious way by investing in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, a robust public transportation system, and critical water conservation initiatives. As we continue working towards our goal of becoming the most sustainable desert city in the world, it’s exciting to see our hard work pay off.”

From Mayor Regina Romero’s Facebook Page.

Mayor Romero posted on social media:

“It was great to celebrate #EarthDay at the Tucson Botanical Gardens and sharing the work that we are doing at the City of Tucson to care for our beautiful Sonoran desert.

It was great to join @Town of Oro Valley Mayor Joe Winfield and hear about the Botanical Gardens’ commitment to sustainability and take part in compost demonstrations.

Thank you Katie Rogerson for organizing this event and bringing us together!”

Earlier in the week, the Mayor, who was recently recognized by the United States Conference of Mayors as a leading climate-resilient local leader and advocate, directed staff to begin implementation of Tucson’s Climate Action Plan so that sixty percent of the recommended items commence in 2024.

Commenting in a press release from her office, Mayor Romero stated:

“We are acting boldly and working strategically. Our Climate Action Plan is the roadmap, and this implementation plan is our guide to organizing ourselves as a City to take the most significant actions to invest our resources as wisely as possible.”

“This is a transformational moment for Tucson and we need the right people leading this work. It is wonderful to see how so much of the work that we are already doing as a City is climate work.”

Mayor John Giles posted:

Remember there is no Planet B.

  1. And CD 6 candidate/former State Senator Kirsten Engel helped our neighborhood Earth Day cleanup. I asked her to bring her 18 year old daughter next year.
