How Tucson Repelled a Koch Invasion

On Labor Day, Worker Power sounded the alarm: the Koch-sponsored Libre Initiative was planning a Hispanic Heritage Celebration at Tucson’s Embassy Suites Hilton on October 10th!

We concluded that Libre was hoping to recruit Latino Tucsonans to vote for Ciscomani.

Kochs Off Campus! readied the ammunition to ward off this threat: flyers to recruit protesters to stand outside Libre’s event, flyers about Libre to give people coming to Libre’s event, a banner, and signs for protesters to hold.

Libre is part of the Charles Koch-funded MAGA political network. Designed to lure Latinos, Libre is a project of the reactionary Americans for Prosperity, another Koch-funded conspiracy that works against the Democratic Party.

Libre’s event was scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. A dozen protesters held the banner and signs in front of the Hilton from 4:50 to 5:50 p.m. People driving by honked with approval. Hotel (or Libre?) employees stood next to the building and watched us. They waved back when we waved at them.

Only five vehicles turned into the hotel driveway during our hour-long standout. Since LIBRE’s event was a dud, we left when it started to rain.
