Crazy Talk

I found this post regarding military spending at Truthdig.com yesterday

http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/monopolizing_war_what_america_knows_how_to_do_best_20120913/

It points out how stunning (and depressing) our discourse in this area is. Romney is out there beating the drum for increased military spending, and that's the focal point of the debate. If sanity were to prevail, the debate would be over whether to cut military spending by one-half, or two-thirds. And at the same time, we discuss how deep the cuts to Medicaid and Medicare need to be in order to right our fiscal ship. This is crazy talk. Yet, if you look throughout the country, Congressional district by Congressional district, you'd be hard pressed to find any Democrat or Republican, speaking sanely on this issue. Instead, only Green and Libertarian candidates speak out, we label them fringe candidates, and they garner 2% or so of the vote. The other 98% prefer we bankrupt ourselves running 1000 bases strewn around the globe. Pathetic.

  1. I agree with this, but it shouldn’t have to be this way. In several countries now and I believe in a few US cities (Glendale AZ actually was considering it), they have “instant Runoffs,” otherwise known as “Ranked Voting.” The idea is in this election, you could vote for Johnson, but back it up with a second choice vote. Then, if nobody broke 50% and Johnson came in third, your second choice vote would be counted. That would allow you to vote your principles and not have to worry that your vote would be wasted.

If we went to that system, you’d see a huge improvement in the performance of third party candidates overnight. Within a few election cycles, the lock that the Ds and the Rs have on elections would be broken.

  2. I think you SHOULD vote for the person that holds close to your ideals! I think many of his ideas are proven to be false…for example, on spending and the economy. Proof is on the pudding…look at Europe as Exhibit A.Austerity DOESN’T work….but you have to do what you have to do. Vote your conscience.

  3. I have another friend who supports Romney who tells me the same thing. Johnson has a chance, that is good enough for me. Snowball, grapefruit, it will be as big as his ideas are good and his support is inspired. I happen to be a Gary Johnson presidential elector but even if I werent I am going to continue to do the admirable thing and vote for the candidate that best matches my principles. I rarely am tempted by “close race” fever.

  4. Well said, Bob. Contrary to what certain naysayers spout, Pres Obama and Sec Clinton are not clueless and their chairs are dutifully occupied. However, their efforts are being monkey-wrenched by unpatriotic, soulless politicians, Kyl and Romney, who harm our nation just to maintain the power that is slipping from their cold conniving hands. richardringler.weebly.com
