Yes, Che Guevara is a controversial figure. He’s reviled by some, but revered by others, including the proprietor of the Three Sonorans blog.
So, what does it say when the Superintendent of Public Instruction intentionally spits in the eye of the blogger who very clearly holds Che in the highest regard? Huppenthal (as Falcon9):
Che Guvera ran a death camp. This says everything about you to celebrate a death camp executioner. Che Guvera is not to be afraid of, he is to be despised and his memory should be defecated upon.
That’s from the elected official who didn’t see any harm in his comments and is “sorry if his comments offended anyone.” Seems to me that his clear intention on this comment was not just to offend but to insult and anger the blogger whose post he commented upon.
The bottom line: Huppenthal didn’t post anonymously in order to promote a free-flowing debate. He did so because he’s a coward who wanted to offend, insult and anger others with his extreme views without being held accountable. As I said before, he’s not sorry, he’s only sorry he got caught.

I think we should look at the big picture. Huppenthal’s views represent those of a lot of Arizonans. I’m sure that includes some public officials. The question I have for every public official and candidate is “Do you want the votes of people who share these views?”
Hupp doesn’t only promote privatization of k-12 education, he’s anti-science and anti-university. Check out this comment from one of my old blog posts:
Falcon9: Tucson suffers from having a major research university. All such universities plague their local communities because professors like their governments fat and expanding. Professors are also curiously siloed (sic), quite uninformed about what it takes to make government effective.
Major research universities are a plague on their communities? As if Hupp needed one more reason that he should resign.
Isn’t that an amazing comment? One sure-fire way to boost Tucson’s economy and create GOOD-paying career jobs here at home is to fund seed money research grants at the University of Arizona. These small grants allow young researchers to gather pilot data, which can be used to apply for larger grants. (Personally, I think the city should fund seed grants at the UA instead of TREO. UA research has a better track record of performance.)
Hupp is either stupid to the potential economic impacts of a research university or blinded by right-wing ideology.
AZ public education has lost so much under the direction of first, Tom Horne and now, John Huppenthal. Huppenthal has promoted “school choice” over public schools and has NEVER stood up for more public school funding, as his colleagues in the lege slashed and burned our budgets. Indeed, when he did ask for more money, it was for technology upgrades in his department. (Faster blogging?) He is willing to spend what little money is left for public education on private school tuition.
Leaders of school districts have years of schooling and experience in the field before they lead a district. Huppenthal’s only education credential is he chaired an education committee in the legislature. Yet he parlayed himself with the R after his name into the highest education position in the state. (Thanks, low information voters.)
Now, thanks to this blog, everyone in the state, not just educators, can see that he is unfit for his job. I sure hope it sticks.
I think Bob still owes me a beer, too. 🙂
Imagine if a Democratic elected official said something similar about St. Ronald of Reagan.
Ol’ Thucky/Hupp/Falc-o’Socrates Sock Puppet has always seemed to be less a student of history than histrionics. His o’dark thirty pronouncements appear much more in keeping with a deranged and closed mind than open discourse. For the exposure of this creep I salute Bob Lord with a virtual margarita until the time I can buy a round for him personally.
Thanks, and I do enjoy margaritas, whether virtual or real.
