One really has to lament the rapid decline of the Arizona Daily Star. The editors could not bother to send a reporter to Phoenix on Saturday to cover the immigration marches? The Star published an AP wire report (which grossly underestimated the crowd size) without any photos. With all the full-page color advertising that Jim Click has been buying lately you would think the Star could afford to pay a reporter for a few hours of work and petty cash for a tank of gas and lunch.
Here are some photos from a real newspaper, The Arizona Republic. The Republic reports "the sea of protesters stretched half-a-mile along Third Street, from
Indian School to Osborn roads."
Way bigger than any Tea Party rallies for which the Star routinely gives full coverage complete with photos and inflates their crowd size. No media bias there.
Here is another image the Star does not want you to see: a counter-protester with a flag that combines the "don't tread on me" flag long favored by the militia movement and adopted by the Tea Party with the Confederate battle flag. That shouldn't offend anyone (sarcasm).
Finally, a photo from the pro-SB 1070 rally Saturday evening at Diablo Stadium, in what had to be the most uniformly white crowd of people one can imagine in a state with a population as diverse as Arizona. That speaks volumes about what this is really all about.

Only aliens are required to have “papers” to prove they are lawfully present in the U.S. (A first offense is only a misdemeanor under federal law, not a felony as under SB 1070).
No U.S. citizen has ever been required to carry proof of citizenship on their person within the U.S. by federal or state law — until SB 1070. This is a radical departure from existing U.S. law, and is inconsistent with federal law.
My solution focuses on the root cause of violent crime and illegal immigration — the “magnet” or demand from the U.S. for illegal drugs and laborers who can be exploited by their employers because they are undocumented. How about enforcing those laws in addition to immigration laws?
When is the last time a corporate executive went to prison for paying coyotes for human trafficking in “cheap labor” at his company?
Jan Brewer says that Mexican drug cartels are “terrorists.” Well then, every time an American purchases illegal drugs they are providing material support to a terrorist organization and they should be prosecuted.
Your final question is a “straw man” argument. I have never remotely suggested that the U.S. not have an orderly immigration system. By the way, almost half of those aliens in the country “illegally” are here on expired visas and entered the country legally. This system is most definitely broken.
How about if you bring sign to a rally you make sure you spelled everything correctly?
“Your not welcome here” should be “You’re not welcome here.”
Bet they voted no on prop. 100.
“SB 1070 does absolutely nothing to secure the border”
Which is not it’s intent. That is a separate Government issue which also needs to be addressed. SB 1070 is addressed at those which get past an inadequate border patrol.
“It is a violation of law not to have that proof of citizenship on your person at the time of a stop; this includes American citizens.”
Exactly, and this is already the case. See the unfortunate 3 day holding of the man in Chicago, or the “literally hundreds of persons intercepted” you mention in the next paragraph. The Federal Law specifically states papers should be on a person at all time, and any individual must show proper identification or documentation upon being detained by authorities. There is no change here.
The Federal Law:
“Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him pursuant to subsection (d) of this section. Any alien who fails to comply with the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall upon conviction for each offense be fined not to exceed $100 or be imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both.”
“Federal law is being enforced” is actually true. However, Democrats just denied three amendments which would increase funds available for border patrol to meet the epidemic. The percentage of those caught is extremely minor, and once caught not all are processed properly. This is what led to Arizona’s Law. The fact that up to 22 states are talking about putting similar bills into place shows how poorly the situation is addressed.
“Focus on the drug users who finance the Mexican drug cartels, the gun dealers who arm them, and American businesses who pay coyotes for human trafficking. This will do more to address the problem than anything in SB 1070.”
So your solution is to ignore people breaking immigration laws? But that begs a question – does this stance only apply to people immigrating from Mexico? And do you feel it would be better if the country abolished all Visa laws and accepted anyone into the country at any time for any reason?
A web site about “national identity,” i.e. nativism, “from a Neoconservative perspective,” the people who brought us the Iraq war.
SB 1070 does absolutely nothing to secure the border. It simply permits law enforcement to demand from citizens and non-citizens alike proof of citizenship during a stop. It is a violation of law not to have that proof of citizenship on your person at the time of a stop; this includes American citizens. This transforms us into a “show me your papers” police state, but Neoconservatives have no problem with police states.
Federal law is being enforced, there are literally hundreds of persons intercepted every week in Arizona. Go visit an ICE detention center sometime. The argument that the federal government is not doing anything is refuted by the sheer number of detentions.
Focus on the drug users who finance the Mexican drug cartels, the gun dealers who arm them, and American businesses who pay coyotes for human trafficking. This will do more to address the problem than anything in SB 1070.
So the “pro 1070” side is made up of whites and some of their flags can possibly be construed as offensive? As opposed to this, right?

And the funny thing is that its all because Arizona is going to enforce the Federal Law! Because, unlike every other country in the world, apparently the US shouldnt have Visa laws and all our Federal Laws should just be ignored.
This country is such a joke…
