So you think impeaching Bush and Cheney is a waste of time? That it would provoke a backlash, as did the impeachment of Clinton? Do you really think those are equivalent? Really? Sometimes something has to be done simply because it is the right thing to do. Impeaching the tyrants inhabiting our White House is the right thing to do, for our posterity, for history, for preserving our Republic. But more than any of that – which I know won’t hold much water with modern politicians who are only concerned with the next election – it is strongly supported by voters, especially Democratic voters.
What do we gain through impeachment given the ‘short time’ Bush has left in office? How about 500 days in which Bush and Cheney cannot launch another disastrous war, or veto more good legislation that our people need, or nominate more federal judges, or Supreme Court Justices? How about a constrained and chastened Executive who will stay within the bounds of the Constitution, and a Congress reestablished as the rightful repository of ultimate sovereign authority? How about a future free of a doctrine of Unitary Executive power that claims the right to snatch you off the street, deport you, torture you and kill you without any check or oversight or opportunity to challenge your persecution? Talk about needing a government of angels, not men… I think a few folks think that these things might be worth the candle of impeachment, and that we should light that bad-boy right away.
Here’s a real gob smacker for you: almost 90% of respondents support impeachment in a recent MSNBC non-scientific poll. That’s a lot of pissed off people, even if it is not a scientific poll.
So maybe the poll is being pushed more strongly by Democratic sites than Republican ones. Maybe people who feel betrayed and powerless are more likely to use such a poll to express their outrage. But 90% of more than a half a million respondents is hard to argue with.
But if you insist, then OK. Let’s look at some scientific polling, Mr. Skeptic. Let’s keep one thing in mind when looking at these polls. No specific article of impeachment is on the table yet. No investigations or hearings of an impeachment inquiry have been televised. No top level political appointee from the White House has been forced to testify under oath. In other words, all the American people have to judge this President’s actions by is open press sources. How many more might decide it’s time for the Administration to go when they learn the dirty secrets still hidden by "executive privilege" and find out what Cheney is hiding in his man-sized safe?
ARG’s poll in July indicated that Americans are already split as to the immediate impeachment of Bush. The county is divided in half. I think I’ll take those odds even if I’m a sniveling politician, considering I’ve got truth a subpoenas on my side. Even better if I’m a sniveling Democratic politician, almost 70% of my base are with me, as well as a clear plurality of Independents. Hell, I could probably win election on this issue alone.
And the numbers only get better if you put Cheney in the sights first: then 54% of respondents want you to pull the trigger. Heck, nearly one in five Republicans want Cheney impeached. How much ass coverage does a Democrat need? These are not one-time anomalous results. Over and over, multiple polls over time are getting similar results. The American people are ready – nay, demanding that our Congressional servants defend our Republic from the criminals who inhabit the White House.
It is time for the tyranny to end, and short of the people rising and exercising their ancient right expressed in the Declaration of Independence to "alter or abolish" such tyranny, the only power under our Constitution that can protect the people from
tyrants in the White House is Congress wielding the power of
impeachment. Impeachment is the sword of liberty and the Congress should not be halting in using it to defend Americans’ liberties.
To any members of Congress in a position to buck our leadership’s pusillanimous unilateral constitutional disarmament who may read this, I have a great book that I would like to share with you. It is John Nichols’ "The Genius of Impeachment: The Founders’ Cure for Royalism," and I have a free copy waiting just for you. Call me, and I’ll gladly give you a copy I’ve reserved just for you. Hell, if you want, I’ll come over and read the damned thing to you myself…

Don’t worry about the crufixion of the GOP in ’08. The do-nothing, spineless Democrats have pretty much guaranteed to take those I’s and turn them off from voting for the progressives next year.
I think the last time I have seen a group of people bungle something this bad was the Watergate burglary.
The judiciary in Pima County has become corrupt and unethical. On November 4th, 2008, Vote NO to retaining Pima County Judge Clark Munger.

Joe,
You are clear impeaching Bush to put Cheney in office is not an option. We must do both or neither. If you think taking both out and handing the WH to Nancy is an option, we are going to have to agree to disagree. No effing way we can do this with current D numbers.
While it is moot, if D had 60+ in the Senate and close to 2/3 of the House, maybe.
Given current numbers, no way.
Our math can differ. I think we’re pretty much f^%$ed until Bush is gone. Our efforts are best concentrated on a brutal crucifixion of the GOP in 2008. BRUTAL. I want nothing less than the destruction of the party.
That image is amazing…I believe we are justified in our anger at the current situation, young and old alike. At this point in time, I resonate most with a political statement like this:

It puts things into the proper perspective. Please pass it along to anyone willing to listen! And even those who are not…
Iam gettting very tired of hearing about how important raising money is to run for Congress and if you don’t have MONEY it means the PEOPLE will NOT vote for you; then hearing the kind of whinning listed here on this Blog by everyone when your MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Giffords) (a Business Whore) does NOT vote the way she said she would before being elected!
PLEEEEAAASSSEE; someone on this blog had to have VOTED FOR GIFFORDS and is being a little hipocritcal here!!
If you want to see the continued “For Sale Sign” pinned on Congresses Ass than keep voting FOR THE MONEY over the Candidate with your and my interests in mind.
Do mean to tell me that anyone on this Blog had the gall to vote for Giffords knowing she was a Republican Business Owner, never supported a Union , used taxpayers money to fund her family trust and fund her campaign for Congress in 2006 by promising Earmarks to run a pet Solar Project run buy her friends; refused to disclose F.E.C. filings in early 2006 as every other candidate had for months and years; had a boyfiend who was and astronaut who was seeing another woman astronaut who wore diapers while traveling in a car to beat up her lovers rival?
Washington Politics is in bed with Washington Politics on BOTH sides of the aisle!
The reason Congress can’t bring itself to impeach Bush as they did Clinton was that the Clinton impeachment was about Clinton The Bush Impeachment is about Congress authorizing Bush!
So we the people must remove Congress as the enabler of Bush!
I really, and I do mean, really get PO’d by those who think there is no wherewithal for impeachment.
In fact there is a huge groundswell of people, just like you and I, who want impeachment and want it NOW!
I just comes down to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, who in my opinion, have bungled a massive opportunity to go to DC and work in the interest of the American people. Unfortunately, they have tried to appease the right in this country and so far it has worked in Bush’s favor.
There are a lot of independent voters who took the time to work for the Democrats in ’06, only to be sold a bill of goods. Mark my words, we will lose those votes. They, not unlike me, who have lost faith in our elected leaders and now know we have no voice in the discussion. The corporations do, we don’t.
For 2008, I will devote my time to getting local people elected. No dice for our congressional representative.
Matt, I take exception to your criticism of the “corporate whores” since a “whore” is a female and these corporations are headed by men. I’m not sure what the male version of a whore is, but let’s start with “pimps”.
TERRIFIC POST!! The photo is fabulous. I love a good image.
It’s so good I might have to steal it.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the wherewithal exists for impeachment, and I’m not clear about the reality of such a path. Without question it is deserved. We have a constitutional crisis still to be fully distinguished (at least at large).
The corporate whores have drawn a lot of blood, and the omnivores are connected as hell and getting older. The Christian right is cracking. Iraq is faltering, and now the economy is teetering.
I speculate that you will not see the impeachment many of us would like to see. I do, however, think the odds are significant that the 2008 election will make 06 look like Disneyland.
Now, that’s a fascinating image – Michael Bryan comes to my house and, with Twinkle sitting on his lap, reads aloud to me. That could be fun!
Seriously, Michael, my only concern with impeachment is the time and attention it would take away from the oversight hearings which I believe are the most necessary thing for Democrats to do. We must – absolutely MUST – get out the word of what this administration has and is doing, correct as much as we can, and prevent any more damage! Do I really have to list the things that have been revealed – and yet need to be revealed in these hearings?
