In other Recall news…

There was another Recall Election on Tuesday, not in Arizona, but in the state of Michigan. State Rep. Paul Scott, R-Grand Blanc, became the first state legislator to be recalled in a generation after he conceded defeat in a recall election. Rep. Paul Scott recalled, concedes defeat | Detroit Free Press:

The recall was backed by the Michigan Education Association.

Election turnout was high across Scott’s district, which covers much of south Genesee County, but appeared to be especially strong in union strongholds near the City of Flint where the vote counts were delayed.

Scott's seat will be filled in a special election Feb. 28. Candidates will be selected by their respective political parties. The winner will serve until the end of his current term in December 2012. Scott cannot run in the special election, but could try to re-take the seat in next year's regularly scheduled elections.

Backers of the recall, led by the Michigan Education Association, said the results vindicated their complaints that Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican majorities in the Legislature were ignoring the will of the people by enacting cuts to public education, extending the state income tax to some pension income and repealing the main state business tax. The union said that recalling Scott — while not affecting the overall balance of power at the Capitol — would send a strong signal to Snyder and the Republicans to change course.

MORE from Daily Kos: Union-busting, homophobic Michigan state Rep. Paul Scott narrowly recalled:

Scott, a Republican, was chair of the state's House Education Committee, and in that role he worked with Michelle Rhee's StudentsFirst to develop bills limiting collective bargaining for teachers and making it easier to fire teachers without reasonable and just cause. During his career, he had also amassed quite a record as a homophobe.
