Kelly and Gallego Sponsor Increases to the Child and Earned Income Tax Credits

All of the United States Democratic Senators, including Arizona’s Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego, have sponsored proposals to expand the Child and Earned Income Tax Credit Programs that would benefit 300,000 Arizonans.

It should be noted that the Harris/Walz Campaign supported similar measures during the 2024 Campaign.

According to a press release from Senator Kelly’s office, the American Family and Tax Cut for Workers Act would:

“Expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to support families with children by increasing the credit amount from $2,000 per child to:

  • $6,360 for newborns.
  • $4,320 for children ages 1–6.
  • $3,600 for children ages 6–17.”

It would also “end the discriminatory phase-out for low-income families, ensuring that the families of 17 million children currently left out of the full credit receive the same benefit as middle-class families.”

It would “deliver the credit monthly so parents can better keep up with bills as they arise while indexing the CTC to inflation to preserve its value over time.”

“Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)—the Worker Tax Cut—for childless workers, who currently receive far less than parents by nearly triple the average tax break for many workers without children and extending eligibility to younger workers under 25 and older workers over 64.”

Commenting on the proposals that would, unlike the Musk/Trump/Vance Central Committee-supported legislation, actually provide relief to lower and middle-class Americans, Senator Kelly stated:

“Raising a family is more expensive than ever, and Arizona parents are feeling the pressure of high prices for everything from childcare to groceries. But right now, President Trump wants to sign another tax giveaway for billionaires and large corporations. Instead of more handouts for the rich, we should be cutting taxes for working families so they can get ahead.”

In the same press release, Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto relayed:

“With costs skyrocketing right now thanks to the Trump administration, millions of hardworking Americans need expanded tax relief to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table for their families. This bill is focused on those who really need a tax cut – middle-class Americans who contribute to our economy – not Donald Trump’s billionaire friends.”

Colorado Senator Michael Bennet offered:

“Working people need relief more than ever. The Trump Administration’s reckless tariff policy will cost the average American family upwards of $3,800 annually. These tariffs, coupled with an extension of Trump’s tax cuts for his billionaire friends, are an insult to hard working Americans. Senator Cortez Masto and I are committed to passing real tax relief for middle-class families through the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.”

For people that are paying attention, these pro-worker and pro-family tax credit proposals, along with a recent Democratic Senate proposal to raise the national minimum wage to $17.00 by 2030, show that the Democrats are crafting a policy agenda that should appeal to the great majority of the American People.
