From Steve Gall:
Here is the latest on HB2408, mandatory school recess and it's not good. The House Education Committee, Rich Crandall Chairman, will hear the bill next month. There are objections from both Democrats and Republicans for 2 major reasons. (1) They feel the 30 minutes of recess time will take away from the academic time of the school day (2) Some members sit on school boards and they are afraid the state will take away their local control. This has been very frustrating for me because every teacher I have talked to says the kids need these breaks to perform better! I have even compromised the bill and revised it to allow recess after or before lunch supervised by monitors to count as part of the 30 minutes of recess and the school district can choose how to implement the program. I am trying to get an audience with the Arizona School Boards Association in Phoenix to plead my case. Their support is very crucial! However, I have gained support from the Tucson Education Association.
It would be great if people can start e-mailing or calling the members of the Committee. These kids need recess breaks for their health and wellbeing and so do the teachers! I am enclosing the member list with e-mails and phone numbers. I need 6 votes to get it out of committee and on to the House floor.
