The elected PCs of LD 9 held an election today via Zoom and ElectionBuddy to send attorney Chris Maths, teacher and small business owner Nathan Davis, and Civic Engagement Program Manager Anakarina Rodriguez for appointment to the State House seat now vacant due to the resignation of Dr. Randy Friese.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors will appoint one of those candidates before the 2022 legislative session begins in January.
The LD 9 election had 151 voters and proxies present and voting. There was a large slate of candidates, and each gave a brief presentation as to their qualifications and reasons to vote for them. Of course, these presentations followed an intense couple of weeks of outreach and lobbying of the elected PCs by the candidates and whatever campaign organizations they were able to assemble in the short time frame given.

The voting was done via weighted block voting (due to the inclusion of proxies) via ElectionBuddy, with those candidates achieving 50% + 1 vote (76 votes) being elected to the slate of three.
The first round of voting required PCs to select three candidates and resulted in the election of Chris Mathis with 90 votes. You can see our interview with Chris, his appearance at DGT, and his address to the PCs at the LD 9 meeting here on BlogForArizona. No other candidate met the threshold in the first round.
The second round of voting required PCs to select two candidates and resulted in no candidate having met the threshold, and the elimination of the lowest polling candidate. The highest-polling candidates in the second round were Nathan Davis, with 54 votes, and Anakarina Rodriguez, with 52.
The third round of voting again required PCs to select two candidates and again resulted in no candidate having met the threshold, and the elimination of the lowest polling candidates, once again. The highest-polling candidates in the second round were Nathan Davis, with 67 votes, and Anakarina Rodriguez, with 66.

The fourth round of voting again required PCs to select two candidates and resulted in the election of Nathan Davis, with 95 votes, (you can see our interview with Nathan, his appearance at DGT, and his address to the PCs here on BlogForArizona) and Anakarina Rodriguez, with 82 votes (you can see our interview with her [coming soon] and her address to the PCs here on BlogforArizona).
All three candidates, in addition to Nancy Gutierrez (you can see our interview with her here on BlogForArizona), have previously announced their intent to run for the nomination in next year’s primary, so we should have an excellent field of candidates in next year’s primary.
