In an impressive debut, Jane Fry for LD17 Senate and Kevin Volk for LD17 House vowed to restore financial responsibility, re-establish reproductive freedom and protect our vanishing water supply.
“The incumbents that we have representing us right now are so irresponsible and extreme,” Volk said. “They just are too reckless to govern.”
“Financial accountability and figuring out how we can spend our dollars in a way that actually benefits all the people in the state, as opposed to only a select few, is definitely one of my priorities,” Fry said.
They spoke at yesterday’s Tanque Verde Valley Democratic Club meeting, hosted by board member Luci Messing and 2nd Vice Chair John Grant.
Overcome GOP advantage
They referred to the Republican legislature’s disastrous school vouchers and tax cuts for the wealthy that destroyed a $10 million state government surplus into a $400 million shortfall – in one year.
Democrats are making a concerted effort to flip the state legislature in 2024, and winning two seats in LD17 is key to the plan. Republicans have a 13,917 registered voter advantage in the district, one of the worst gerrymandered districts in Arizona.
The MAGA incumbents are anti-abortion, pro-Trump, anti-vaccine, anti-gun safety, election deniers. They are severely out of touch with the values of Arizona voters.
Meanwhile, Fry and Volk are picking up widespread support from the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (ADLCC), the National Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, Save Our Schools, the AFL-CIO and state-level Democratic officials.
“They’re all on board to help us message, fundraise and volunteer. So we have enormous support,” Fry said.

Knocking 95,000 doors
Volk and Fry support:
- A state constitutional right to abortion.
- Fully funding public schools.
- A sustainable water plan.
- Affordable housing
- Lowering the cost of living.
They plan to win by knocking on 95,000 voter doors. “Volunteer where you can,” Fry said. “If we’re going to hit 95,000 doors, it’s going to be a lot easier if we get 950 people to do 100 doors than to have nine people knocking on 10,000 doors.”

It’s a tragedy of the pandemic that Amy Fitch is having such devastating health consequences that she has been unable to fulfill her ambition to serve the citizens of LD 17, as she dearly wished to do. We wish her all the best, a full recovery, and hope she can pursue her passion for public service and the welfare of her fellow citizens in the future. Please give her your prayers and healing energy in this comment thread if you wish. I’m sure she will read it at some point.
What happened to Amy Fitch? She was an AMAZING fantastic candidate! Something strange is going on with the democrats in LD 17.
Sanda, nothing strange is going on. Amy Fitch was hospitalized with Covid and had a difficult recovery. She resigned because of health reasons.
I agree she would have been a great candidate. I met her, was impressed and wrote two articles about her. See https://blogforarizona.net/?s=amy+fitch
