MAGA Blowhard is Keynote Speaker at Foothills ‘Education Conference’

Kari ‘n Dave share grins.

Pima County Republican Party Chair David S. Smith will be the keynote speaker at a MAGA-inspired ‘school values conference’ in the Catalina Foothills School District.

This is part of an ongoing campaign of menace by Smith, who has organized disruptions of meetings of the school district and Pima Supervisors. The Pima GOP is impotent, so it resorts to mayhem instead.

Smith, who does not even live in the Catalina Foothills School District, will be among other imported speakers on August 5 at the Catalina Foothills Church, including conspiracy theorists Bernadette Gruber and Dan Grossenbach.

Grossenbach pops up at every CFSD school meeting, whining about critical race theory and personal pronouns. Gruber says public schools teach masturbation.

One of them is Paul Parisi

Smith is pals with political loser Kari Lake, extremist AZ Senator Justine Wadsack, Trump Sheriff Mark Lamb (and Republican US Senate candidate), and bible-thumping Paul Parisi, an Uncle Fester lookalike who aims to “Biblically Transform Your City.”

Swearing in public

Smith is notorious for cursing at Supervisor Matt Heinz during a Pima Supervisors meeting. “I just snapped, man. Here’s the thing, I was vulgar. And that’s what freedom of speech is,” he said on the right-wing Garret Lewis radio show on June 22. “The sergeant lieutenant came over to me and just said, ‘Dave, you just can’t swear.”

For 33 years, Smith has made a career of being a Tucson ex-cop, making money from active police officers with videos, one 76-page self-published book, articles, and seminars. Even though he was a police officer for only three years, he bills himself as a “law enforcement icon” and “one of America’s top law enforcement trainers.”

Hyuk, hyuk. I’m JD Buck Savage!

Training the police to be ‘warriors

The training includes grainy YouTube videos made in the 1980s. He uses the alias of “J.D. Buck Savage,” a gap-toothed chucklehead with a gun. His biggest moneymaker is running his Winning Mind Seminars, “training law enforcement personnel to WIN!” and to be “warriors.” Treating citizens like enemy soldiers is exactly what is wrong with American policing, and what gets citizens, especially minorities, killed at such appalling rates.

Making the GOP a cadre of culture warriors

Smith, age 71, was elected Pima GOP Chair in January 2023. He oversees the Pima GOP Facebook page and Twitter page, which are dumpster fires of rage. Notable posts include:

  • President Joe Biden is a “dictator,” leading a “lawless reign of terror.”
  • Impeach Biden and expunge Trump’s impeachments.
  • “The Left is evil and ghoulish. It’s a cult of death.”
  • The FBI is hopelessly compromised.
  • “The trans manifesto that calls for the murder of Christian Children.” March 31, 2023
  • Repeated calls to action to disrupt the Pima Supervisors’ meetings.
  • Standing at a church pulpit in front of a cross with a sign saying, “I’m voting Republican in 2024.”
  • The Pima Supervisors are “totalitarian” and starting a “Hammer Heinz” harassment campaign.
  • Retweeting Sen. Justine Wadsack and Rep. Rachel Jones dressed up as mass shooters with assault weapons in front of the Arizona Capitol.

Smith sends out the apocalyptic Pima GOP newsletter, the Grassroots Gazette, which treats readers as the “PCRP herd” of cattle. His Bible-quoting column, “From the Desk of Dave Smith,” adopts the tone of a MAGA stormtrooper.

He writes that the Left wants “no gas, no cars and eventually, no private property” in the April 25, 2023, issue. He adds, “The word ‘sustainability’ means “Big Brother will decide what you drive, own and do!”

He wrote in the May 18, 2023, newsletter, “The culture war is a vast struggle,” and “The struggle is on and here in Pima County, we are treating it like a guerilla war.”

Incoherent anti-trans prejudice

From the June 5, 2023, newsletter, he attacks “Our Soviet-style Pima County Board of Supervisors” and brags that he attracted “one hundred speaker folks” to talk about conspiracy theories and Covid denials. He calls on readers to “Be angry.”

Smith cheers the overturning of affirmative action, saying the program was “the Left’s most beloved totalitarian plan” in the July 3, 2023, issue.

His incoherent anti-trans prejudice appeared in the April 1, 2023, issue. He wrote that “School Boards, who think the way to treat gender dysphoria is to give boys access to the girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms without any regard for the feelings or the safety of the girls and are having to bring in junk science psychologists to claim this abuse of female students is somehow an essential act to prevent suicide.”

Smith’s grift of training and indoctrinating his acolytes to treat their fellow citizens as enemies who are out to get them and their families is everything wrong with today’s politics. It is people like Smith we need to send back to the fever swamps of the KKK, the John Birch Society, and the militia movement, and cast out of mainstream politics where their poisonous paranoia and hate can freely infect our body politic.

  1. You supported and voted for a TWICE CONVICTED RACIST. You have zero credibility and are the reason so many are pulling their children out of Public Schools. You’re not part of the solution, you are the problem.

  2. That school district has had several violations of the separation of church and state so keep an eye on them and report to Secular AZ when you see it. Thanks.

    • Secularism can never work and here’s why. In the secular world view they do not want to consider God’s word as any sort of benchmark for making political decisions. So that only leaves us with man’s word and man will never agree. One man says abortion is right another saying it’s wrong. So how does secularism solve the issue? Only through force. Sure, if enough people want a thing a certain way they can force their way. But the country, and its government, were not formed under man’s word, but God’s. If you people want to change how our nation is run you are only going to succeed by force. I know you know that and welcome that “debate” as well. Oh, by the way, it’s natural and right, the strong will always prevail and guess who’s the strongest man in the room? Hint: it ain’t your daddy, it’s mine.

      • This is an absurd argument once you recognize that not everyone is a Christian, and more importantly, even Christians disagree on doctrine and interpretation. Your argument that the only means of resolving conflicts in the absence of religious foundations is force ignores the promise and history of democracy, and seems wholly ignorant of the many bloody and generations-long wars fought exactly over differing interpretations of Christianity. Your ‘argument’ is absurd and ignorant, even leaving aside the wholly separate issue of non-Christian faith traditions.
