Marshall Home™, Billionaire Democratic Mayoral Candidate, is None of the Preceding Things

Tonight I witnessed an interesting meeting at Drinking Liberally with Tucson Democratic (sic) Mayoral candidate Marshall Home™. That's not a typo: Marshall has trademarked his name. And that is the tip of the weird iceberg that is the Marshall Home™ worldview.

If I told you that someone admired Michael Savage and Neal Bortz as really smart and courageous men, and that someone thought the only person on the Tucson City Council who isn't a corrupt idiot is Steve Kozachik, and that someone thinks that Obama is a Marxist, you probably would conclude that this person is not a Democrat. Well, that person is Marshall Home™.

Marshall told the gathering at Drinking Liberally that he decided to run as a Democrat because that's where the votes are in Tucson. He doesn't actually believe in the party system and identifies as an independent, but given that the majority of Tucsonans are registered Democrat, he figures that he stands the best chance of winning by competing for the Democratic nomination. I only wish it were that straight-forward: how to explain Mayor Walkup were that calculation correct?

Regardless of his, shall we say, utilitarian Democratic affiliation, Marshall is what I would call an extreme idiosyncratic constitutitionalist; the sort of person who claims we are all sovereign citizens. He believes citizens are not subject to statutory laws or taxation (unless you are an employee of the government), in radically reduced government, that the Federal Reserve should be abolished, government debt is a fraud, and judges are merely administrators of the federal corporation FDR declared bankrupt as part of the New Deal. In other words, he is one of the those people who wholly rejects the legitimacy of the Federal government and the entire modern bureaucratic state, a.k.a. a nut. Nice enough fellow, but certifiably a nut.

Marshall claims to be a multi-billionaire. I very much doubt that this vast wealth exists outside his own mind and a slew of specious default judgments obtained through the very court system he considers corrupt and illegitimate. He claims to have made his vast fortune by forming partnerships with people who have debts and then proving those debts to be fraudulent and taking a fee for his service. In this way, he represents litigants before the courts without having to be an attorney.

He claims to have a series of $500 million dollar default claims against a series of Arizona public officials, including Brewer, Bennett, and Martin, totaling $3.5 billion. He admits that he considers these judgments as part of his estate. Marshall also claims to have a default judgment against the city itself for $5 million dollars: I guess he doesn't need to worry about drawing a salary if elected, he can just enforce his judgment. In short, reports of his personal wealth are exaggerated at best, and more likely wholly fictive. I look forward to his financial disclosure, if he actually gets that far.

Asked what his aspirations are should he be elected Mayor, his main concern seems to be to "discharge the debt of Tucson", whatever that might entail. He can't be specific because he has to "study the documents" and he has to be Mayor to get an audit of the city finances to figure out how to deliver the people of Tucson into "solvency". He seems to think that he will discharge all of Tucson's liabilities by proving them fraudulent and the result of corruption.

His campaign literature lays out the basics of his platform. They include (a photo of his own flier):

While he presented these profundities to the folks at Drinking Liberally, he wore a golden plastic crown throughout the entire presentation to "remind folks that they are the sovereigns". To sum up: sovereign citizenship, voluntary compliance with laws and taxation, Grand Juries open to anyone to present indictments, jury nullification, abolish most debts as fraudulent. If these are your ideas, then Marshall Home™ is your candidate for Mayor.

That Marshall Home™ could be reported by local media as a legitimate Democrat, a billionaire, and a serious candidate for Mayor simply illustrates how the press-release driven media culture has fundamentally undermined serious reporting. Two minutes of conversation with Marshall would reveal to anyone with a lick of goddamn sense that he is not a Democrat, not a billionaire, and not a serious candidate for anything other than king of his own world of make-believe.
