Mayor Romero and 4 Latino Mayors Call for Passage of Build Back Better Agenda

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero joined other Hispanic mayors from Long Beach, Brownsville, Topeka, and Providence to call for immediate passage of  President Biden’s Build Back Better Agenda and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. They praised the historic investments and generational impacts for local communities and families that the agenda will bring.

The mayors highlighted that 21.2% of Hispanic families fall below the poverty line and need help. The Build Back Better Agenda provides important assistance by cutting taxes for the middle class, lowering costs for working families, creating more jobs, and sustaining economic growth for years to come. A Zoom recording of the full press conference is available.

The mayors included:

  • Regina Romero (City of Tucson, AZ)
  • Mayor Robert Garcia (City of Long Beach, CA)
  • Mayor Trey Mendez (City of Brownsville, TX)
  • Mayor Michelle De La Isla (Topeka, KS)
  • Mayor Jorge Elorza (City of Providence, RI)
Robert Garcia, Democratic mayor of Long Beach, CA.

“The Build Back Better Agenda is a plan to strengthen this country and especially support families that need it most,” said Long Beach, CA Mayor Robert Garcia. “Making investments in programs that lower the costs of child care, support the care of our older adults, lower health care premiums for millions of families, all while extending tax cuts for families with kids is absolutely needed and the right thing to do.”

Build Back Better includes:

Lower Costs

  • Lower Child Care Costs
  • Lower Higher Education Costs
  • Lower Prescription Drug Costs
  • Lower Health Care Costs
  • Lower Housing Costs

Cut Taxes

  • Tax Cuts for Families with Children
  • Tax Cuts for Workers Without Children

Create Jobs

  • Workforce Training
  • Clean Energy Jobs
  • Investments in Teachers and Schools

Shockingly, the Biden agenda has been blocked by Democratic US Senator Sinema’s sabotage of the Build Back Better agenda.

“President Biden has made it a priority to lift up minorities in this country and his policies and work in his short time in office has proven that commitment,” said Brownsville, TX Mayor Trey Mendez. “Communities like Brownsville have already benefited from the President’s support and funding and I am confident that we are on our way to building back better than ever before.”

“The Build Back Better agenda includes funding to help alleviate historic inequities Latinos face in several facets of our society – from making childcare more accessible to underserved areas, to addressing the disproportionate impact of climate change on communities of color,” said Tucson, AZ Mayor Regina Romero.

“Investing in childcare and early childhood education is an investment in our overall economic development. This is one of the keys to getting people back in the workplace,” said Topeka, KS Mayor Michelle De La Isla. “We need to ensure that women and single parents all across our country are able to send their children to proper child care so they can go to work, helping their kids be successful, and become future engines of our economy as well.”

“Despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented, our communities still believe in the American Dream,” said Providence, RI Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “Investing in our children from cradle to career will prepare our nation to have an educated workforce ready to take on the challenges of a changing world. President Biden’s Build Back Better plan is the bold action we need to make the American Dream achievable for all.”

  1. Half empty/half full is not my philosophy, it’s more “assume the worst & hope for the best”. Agree the compromised steps are inadequate so hopefully we can make the Sinemas, Manchins (& Liebermans for that matter) along with their prospective wanna-be acolytes go away & never darken our party again.

    • In another time, or in a sane world, that little stunt may have been cute, some reaching over the aisle fun.

Corporations are People and a Prada Socialist, showing that we’re all Americans.

But since the reaching only goes one way in the Moscow Mitch Senate, WTF??????????????????????

I don’t recall a Senator ever saying F U as loudly to their voters.

She can’t possibly be running again, she’s giving her potential opponents too much ammo.

  2. “Probably the last chance for a very long time to legislate badly needed and long overdue progressive policies has been lost.” Maybe, perhaps maybe not. If, and it’s a mighty big if, even the pared down BBB gets by them it seems the Democrats best option is to message the hell out of the benefits. Especially during the mid-term campaigns. Elect more progressives into both houses of Congress (something Schumer adamantly opposes) and pass the entire original bills in 2023. Believe this would cement Democratic legacies well into the future ‘a la FDR & make the US a much better place. Which is what conservatives adamantly oppose (Stress that too!).

    • “Elect more progressives into both houses of Congress (something Schumer adamantly opposes) and pass the entire original bills in 2023.”

WB, that’s a nice thought, but I think it’s a long shot even if the Democrats improve their messaging.

The gutted BBB plan is a major step in the right direction, to be sure. And in a perfect world it would keep the Democrats in the majority in 2022. But we know the problems with that, no need to enumerate them.

I was listening to Nancy Pelosi yesterday talking about the zillions of jobs these two (infrastructure) bills will create. But we gutted free community college so Americans will probably be too uneducated for them. Contradictions like that are really annoying. Everyone gets free pre-K and that’s great, giving children a better start in life. Why can’t we carry that through to a couple of years of community college?

Not allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices is just wrong, morally wrong. It absolutely reeks of corruption, but Sinema is going to get away with this. The pharmaceuticals paid 750K for her and their return on investment is in the stratosphere.

As for getting more progressive legislation anytime soon, I have a hard time imagining that. We’re still waiting for the public option on Obamacare.

I like your optimism but I’m just not into the cup half empty/ half full thing. Progressive legislation is long overdue in this country. Making a few compromised steps forward is good, but not nearly enough.

  3. “Don’t embarrass the President.” Progressives must cave to avoid embarrassing the president, the great multi-decade legislator who caved to a hillbilly and a crazy woman.

New — Pelosi told her members: “Don’t embarrass” the president by voting down the infrastructure bill as he flies overseas, I’m told

She also said she would put the infrastructure bill on the floor today and hold the vote open to get the bill through.

Pelosi also said she would put the infrastructure bill on the floor today and hold the vote open to get the bill through. When Rep. Schakowsky asked about Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, she said take the president at his word he will get the larger bill through

  4. “They have done nothing to be trusted.” I guess that depends on whether you’re a corporate donor or an ordinary constituent. Manchin and Sinema have been quite loyal to their corporate donors.

Dems, be careful. If you give Manchin & Sinema infrastructure w/o having them vote for BBB, they will not keep their promise. They have done nothing to be trusted. Really there should be a three-fold agreement: you get infrastructure if you support BBB, VRA & For the People Act.

    • “They have done nothing to be trusted. Really there should be a three-fold agreement: you get infrastructure if you support BBB, VRA & For the People Act.” That’s the right approach. Hate to go Michael Coreleone but If they continue to oppose then their states get nothing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qynydbBpqy4

  5. Sinema is now praising herself for the cut-in-half, severely gutted Build Back Better “framework” that Biden is selling today. It was so predictable that Biden would expect the progressives to cave on the reconciliation.

Ruben Gallego was on MSNBC, highly critical of Sinema and Manchin, said he will vote for the bipartisan infrastructure bill only if S&M firmly commit to the reconciliation framework which they apparently have not.

Build Back Better is looking like the Obamacare version of universal healthcare.

All that can really be said is that Democrats are their own worst enemy. Manchin and Sinema have been allowed to steal this moment from the American people. Probably the last chance for a very long time to legislate badly needed and long overdue progressive policies has been lost.

After months of productive, good-faith negotiations with
    @POTUS
and the White House, we have made significant progress on the proposed budget reconciliation package. I look forward to getting this done, expanding economic opportunities and helping everyday families get ahead.

  6. VIDEO. Again, a woman politely tried to speak with Kyrsten Sinema in an airport. Sinema told the woman, “Do not touch me” when in fact the woman never tried to touch Sinema.
