(UPDATED) Mayors Romero, Giles, and Woods Celebrate the Arrival of Earth Day 2022

Tomorrow is Earth Day 2022 and many of Arizona’s most committed mayors on sustainability, clean energy, and environmental issues will be taking part in events, sponsored by Arizona State University’s   Sustainable Cities Network, across the state to celebrate the event and promote policies to save the planet from our own short sightedness over the last century.

Among the Mayors participating in Earth Day Events are Tucsons Regina Romero, Mesa’s John Giles, and Tempe’s Corey Woods.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero

Commenting on Earth Day, Mayor Romero, the leader of the number three city in the country for climate residency, relayed:

“We must work every day to address the urgency of climate change. The City of Tucson is working towards an equitable, green future for all. Our collective efforts today are making a positive impact for Tucson’s future. We have planted over 45,000 trees and became the first public transit operator in Arizona to launch fully-electric buses for fixed route services. We are advancing the electrification of our City fleet, we have amended our residential building code to ensure the built environment
is EV ready, and are committed to a future with zero waste by 2050.”

Mesa Mayor John Giles

Mayor Giles offered:

“The City of Mesa has a history of being a leader in implementing sustainable practices. Building on that history, I’m proud that Mesa released a Climate Action Plan with bold but achievable goals. Earth Day is an excellent opportunity to put into action the many ways we can protect our planet and have a lasting, positive impact. We can make a difference on a local, national, and global level.”

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods

Mayor Woods commented:

“It’s been so great to see the amount of energy around this year’s Earth Day events. When multi-city, multi-sector brainstorming and collaboration take place, we are able to tap into the solutions that can address complex sustainability challenges. I look forward to sharing the stage at the Green Living Magazine Sustainability Symposium with many inspiring Arizona leaders and learning where the next opportunities lie not only for our region but our state.”
