In Memoriam

BONNIE GAY RICHARDS, 72, and her husband JAMES "MAC" M. RICHARDS, 79, died the week prior to last due to complications from bad respiratory infections. James was hospitalized on January 21. Bonnie died on January 24 in her home in Green Valley. James passed away on January 30. He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama and retired as Chief Research Scientist from the Medical School in Birmingham after a long career as a scientist. Bonnie Richards was a childhood education professor and community educator.

James and Bonnie are survived by three sons: Michael Richards of Washington, D.C., Stephen Richards of Adelaide, Australia and Thomas Richards of Garberville, CA. James has a brother and sister living in the Atlanta, GA area and Bonnie is survived by her sister.

A memorial service will be held at the Good Shepherd UCC Church in Sahuarita on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Good Shepherd UCC Church or the local Habitat for Humanity.

Bonnie Richards was one of the founders of Democratic Women in Action (DeWA) and served as its long time Vice President in charge of programs. In 2008 she spearheaded a fashion show that raised thousands of dollars for the Democratic Headquarters in Green Valley. Bonnie was also active in the Democratic Club of the Santa Rita Area and Green Valley Get Out The Vote (GOTV). Bonnie was active with the League of Women Voters both in Green Valley and in Tucson, Lunching Liberally and she was the current Vice President of the Arizona Federation of the Arizona Democratic Women. Bonnie was well known for hosting Round Tables to discuss issues and fundraising for many women candidates. She also served as the President of the Green Valley American Association of University Women and as a hostess for Habitat for Humanity.

Bonnie enjoyed supporting the events of the Arizona Women's Political Caucus, Planned Parenthood and Arizona List. DeWA under the leadership of President Laurie Cirrincione is sponsoring a table at the March 19 Arizona List Luncheon.

Bonnie was an elected Democratic precinct committeewoman as well as a state committeewoman and her last conversations were about politics, which she loved.

James "Mac" Richards served as the Treasurer of the Democratic Club of the Santa Rita Area and he supported Bonnie in her passionate community and political involvement.
