More About Trolls

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

On Sunday I posted a piece Do not feed the trolls (DNFTT) explaining that Blog for Arizona has had a rash of Trolls of late. At that time, specifically Nobama and Robert.

As I explained, "Trolls are primarily interested in hijacking a web site through its comment page."

Trolls have no respect for individuals or property (intellectual). It is all about them. So please, do not feed the trolls (DFTT). Once I have identified a troll I will remove their comments ASAP and send them to the spam file. When a troll does not get any responses to their troll postings, they will eventually go away.

I am a sport fisherman so I will play out the line before setting the hook and reeling it in. Time to set the hook.

In response to my troll piece, someone new posted his first comment to this blog: Brice asked "What happened to the post from Robert?," after I deleted comments from Robert in accordance with the above troll policy.

Since that comment, Brice has been prolific in posting at least 33 comments by my last count, far in excess of what any reader of this blog ever posts in any given month, let alone within a week. Yeah, it's kind of a big red flag, genius.

The trouble with trolls is that they are too clever by half. They apparently do not know, or care, that when they post comments here the writers get their e-mail address and ISP address which we can use to identify the source (not individuals).

Well, surprise, surprise. Brice's concern for Robert is most interesting after researching the data. It is from the same source. Brice/Robert has the same ISP address in Phoenix, area code 85032. That's all I will disclose.

It may come as a surprise to some of you that political organizations, PR/lobbying firms and corporations routinely pay people to troll on blog sites. The Low Spark of Well-Heeled Trolls I know! Shocking.

So here's the deal "Brice/Robert," or whatever name you are using today, you can either identify yourself and disclose for whom you are working, and I may allow you to continue to post comments on this blog, or I am going to send your troll ass to the spam file along with your bomb thrower alter ego Robert. Have I made myself clear?

BTW, in case any of you did not immediately recognize it, Barry Sataro is also Nobama. Not very clever.

Do not feed the trolls.

  1. @AZ

If I’ve posted so many factually incorrect things, please quote a couple of them. Just saying it is so, doesn’t cut it.

I have to admit I don’t really understand your employer’s position. I understand it in a general sense, but no one should be ashamed or worried to associate their opinions with their true self. IMO, anyway.

  2. As any long time reader of this blog knows, I explained when I began writing for this blog that the pseudonym is required by my employer because they reasonably do not want clients (some of whom hold conservative political views) being upset about opinions I express here, which are my own, and they do not want the people who post comments here making harrassing phone calls to the office.

As for “I will never comment here again IF you can show one comment I made that was an outright lie, or for that matter even untrue” – Dude, you post so many factually incorrect talking points here, where does one begin? Your goal is to engage readers in a back-and-forth to dominate the comments section and I am not going to play your game; you are a troll. As long as your comments remain respectful of the readers of this blog, they are aware of your status and should DNFTT.

  3. Ben,

I’m not sure I understand your last. If AZbluemeanie was to splash my name across the front page of the Arizona Republic, along with my comments here, I would be happy. There’s nothing I’ve said here that anyone who knows me or has worked with, doesn’t know.

My reputation is based on honesty and transparency. I don’t need to hide behind a made up name amongst my peers. Why some people like to hide behind made up names, I don’t know.

  4. Yes, “Brice”, it’s very nice that Matt or David or this Meanie goon can figure out who you are. But that doesn’t mean your opinions expressed here are tied to your reputation, except in the case of 3 people whose social and political circles you don’t run in.

  5. Ben,

It wouldn’t have taken a rocket scientist to figure out who I was. Azbluemeanie has access to the email addresses I used to post (both of which are real). A 2 second search on google would have shown that the names of both emails point to my myspace page (years outdated, btw) and my real name. Of course, Robert IS my real name as well, it’s my middle name.

Searching my name (which AZbluemeanie has) would show him the name of my business, my home address, etc. He/she would have you believe it was serious detective work. If I was worried about hiding my identity, I certainly wouldn’t have used my real email addresses, and I know how to browse from anonymous proxies.

I find it extremely insulting that he/she would suggest that I am some sort of paid plant, just because I disagree. For all we know, since he/she hides his/her identity, AZbluemeanie could be a paid democratic plant.

  6. Brice:

(I’m not speaking for the lefties who run this thing; just a remark:)

Your “real name” includes a surname. Brice isn’t as common a name as, say, Joe, or Bob, but it’s a set of people and not a person.

Nobody safe the three guys who run this ‘blog can attach your comments to your reputation. If one searches for your name on Google this stuff doesn’t come up.

  7. I will never comment here again IF you can show one comment I made that was an outright lie, or for that matter even untrue.

If you can’t show that, why would you want to suppress truth? I’m not here spreading lies or fabrications. I’m responding to your blog. Are you suggesting that you wish to only have those who agree with you read it? What good is preaching to the choir? Who knows, maybe someday I’ll agree with you. Or, heaven forbid! You agree with me!

  8. Yes, I posted as Robert. To anyone paying attention, it should have been blindingly obvious. Your zip code search is a little off, though. I live in 85053. And my name IS Brice. Shoot, you even know my real name, since you can see my IP, you can see my email address, which is my full name. Since you have that, I’m sure you can also find my real address, which happens to be off of 35th ave and Thunderbird.

It’s almost amusing that you think I’m on some payroll. Do you really think that for an American to think different than you, they must be some corporate plant?

Heck, I’m posting by my real name (which I guarantee you will give you my home address with less than 1 minute on google), from my real e-mail address. Can’t say the same about you, can we?

  9. (Nonpartisan, modern classical-liberal ‘blog) Goldwater State gets less traffic than B4A–no paid contributors, etc.–but approximately zero trolling.

Have a look at the warning at the top of my comment page.

Anonymity is what enabled Internet trolling. I check each post made anonymously or without a surname, and discourage the practice.

Of course, you’re in a tougher spot, as one of your main ‘bloggers isn’t a man but rather a “Blue Meanie”, detaching, just as for trolls, his activity here from his real-world reputation. But there’s no Rule of the Internet that says you have to be evenhanded.

Want to get rid of trolls? Bad anynoymous comments. Make people verify who they are if they’re fishy. Econlog does it with no chilling effect. Want to at least repel them? Put up a warning like the one at Goldwater State.
