The Sierra Vista Herald covered the other questions from the CD 2 GOP congressional debate sponsored by the Greater Vail Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson, and students of the Valley Academy and High School.
The candidates’ responses pretty much speak for themselves: they are not fit to serve in public office. Republican candidates distinguish their positions at Vail forum (pay wall):
Following are synopsis on issues the students asked of the CD2 candidates.
Shelley Kais noted the federal government’s corporate and income tax structures are running companies out of the country and it must be reversed.
With the current bureaucracy its takes “$10,000 to hire an employee,” she said.
And, the federal government is involved in arenas it shouldn’t be and that includes dictating to states how to educate, which still is stuck in the 1950s, she said.
As for the continuing national health care debate, Kais said health care is not a constitutional right and it should be left to the free market.
When it comes to America’s southern border issue, she said the answer is simple: “We need to obey and enforce the rule of law,” noting the United States has sufficient laws and rules already in place but not being used.
Martha McSally said she was once told the federal tax code is multiple times larger than the Bible “but there’s no good news in it” and Congress will not fix it.
The federal government needs to get out of the state’s educational realm, because currently the U.S. government provides 8 percent of the funds while requiring 50 percent of the paperwork, she said, adding the control of schools “should be at the state and local level.”

When it comes to America’s southern border problems, she said the root causes for them go back to the 1980s when promises were made to fix the problems and now “we still have a failed border security,” she said.
Chuck Wooten said when it comes to the federal tax structure it needs to be addressed now, noting “the time for rhetoric and talking points has passed … from my experience payroll taxes choke the life out of businesses and need reform in a commonsense way.”

As for the Affordable Care Act, Wooten said his position is clear and concise: “It has to be eliminated. Obamacare is a travesty.”
On the issue of border security he said when it comes to amnesty in any form “I do not support it.”
While the figure of 11 million illegal immigrants in the country has been used for years, he believes the number is more likely 30 to 40 million.
“They are lawbreakers and we need to enforce the laws,” he said.
Yep. Vote for “None of The Above” in the GOP primary for CD 2.
Note: read more on this debate from the Tucson Sentinel. CD2 candidates agree on border security, split on immigration reform.
