More on the Texas Bible class bill

by David Safier

This is a quick post about some material I've found via Google in the past few minutes.

The Texas Bible Course bill I mentioned below apparently requires the teaching of the Bible in public schools. That, of course, is the direction Terri Proud would like to take us using her bill, HB2563, as a start.

A group, the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, is pushing for more Bible ed in schools and is hawking its own textbook, "The Bible in History and Literature." Underneath the promo for the book is a letter of support for the text by Rabbi Daniel Lapin of the American Alliance of Jews and Christians.

From the Wikipedia entry on Rabbi Lapin (I told you this was a quick post. I haven't gone beyond the Wikipedia bio, but the site is rarely inaccurate):

  • Lapin is a passionate political conservative.
  • He supported Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ."
  • He strongly supported the efforts by Terri Schiavo's parents to keep her on life support.
  • He believes atheists are parasites.
  • He breakfasts with Karl Rove and considers Tom DeLay a "close friend."
  • He helped Jack Abramoff with his lobbyist-gambling scam. He also gave Abramoff two fake awards to help Jack get into the Cosmos Club.

This is where the NCBCPS goes to get its Jewish cred.
