Nominating petitions – where the rubber meets the road

Posted by Craig McDermott

Every election cycle, there are far more candidates before nominating petitions are due than after.  In other words, more people start candidate committees than actually file nominating petitions to make it on to the ballot.

For most of the pretenders, collecting signatures requires more work than they can put in (to collect the sigs themselves), more volunteers and campaign workers than they have (to help collect the sigs), and/or more money than they can beg, borrow, or give to themselves (to use to hire a professional sig gathering company).

It's still early, but here is a list of candidates who have submitted their sigs already (note: some of the candidates may have their sigs successfully challenged and may not make it on to the ballot, so all of the candidates listed may not appear on the ballot for August's primary), courtesy the Secretary of State's website (key: incumbent – holds office currently; House/Senate – moving over from the other chamber of the lege; CE – Clean Elections forms filed and money disbursed) –

(Note: sig list current as of close of business Friday, Clean Elections info current as of last Monday)
