Yet again I find myself seduced by the sensible rantings of a right-wing ideologue! Greg Patterson, the Espresso Pundit, a conservative blogger here in Arizona, seldom publishes anything I agree with. Be that as it may, Greg obviously has a fine mind and knows it quite well. But it was still surprising to find a fine public policy suggestion on his site that I whole-heartedly agree with. His post, Shake Up Update, outlines a case for reforming public notice laws to reflect the realities, and reap the efficiencies, of the digital age.
Here’s the meat of Greg’s suggestion:
"In fact, the last time I checked, the State already has an entire office dedicated to getting information to the public. I’m told the office is well run too. Here’s one of GITA’s values.
We believe the public has a right to easy access to public information within the constraints of privacy and confidentiality.
Many of the public notices come from government agencies. Surely,
printing these notices in agate type in the back pages of obscure
newspapers isn’t a way to provide easy access to information.If the Republic is going to abandon the unprofitable areas of the
state, then the state should no longer force business and local
governments to publish notices in the paper. The technology is
available. The agency is in existence. What we need now is a change
in the statute."
I suspect Greg may be suffering severe cognitive dissonance as a result of suggesting that the guv’mint can do something better and more efficiently than bid’ness can. I just hope his medical plan includes good mental health care so he can have that looked at.
