Pearce makes hay before the session starts

by David Safier

Q: How much does an 800 pound gorilla charge for access?

A: Anything he wants.

In Russell Pearce's case, the charge for access — for now, anyway — is $250 a head. That's the cost of attending a fundraising event January 7. Of course, that's only the suggested donation. Anyone can give more, and I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to give less.

Oh, and if you're an AZ pol, you should show up as well, though you may be able to keep your checkbook in your pocket. A combination of more that 70 pols and lobbyists are hosting the bash.

Rules say legislators can't hold fundraisers during the session, so this is Pearce's last shot until June, or whenever the legislature gets out.

Most of the people supporting the event are the usual gang. Lots of health care organizations are represented, for instance. But the surprise entry is the presence of Ziemba Waid Public Affairs on the roster. "Waid" is David Waid, former chair of the AZ Dem party. I guess they hope to get back in the game, and the price is a sizable contribution to the most powerful politician in the state.
