Saturday, January 15, 9:00 a.m.: On Jan. 15, King family members will rally in Arizona, the home state of Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who has opposed changing the Senate’s filibuster rules. On Jan. 15, MLK’s actual birthday, a rally is scheduled in Phoenix to mobilize Arizona residents to demonstrate against state legislation that activists say is intended to suppress voting rights. In July, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld two sections of the law in Brnovich v. National Democratic Committee, ruling that it doesn’t violate the Voting Rights Act provision against racial discrimination. The rally will begin at S. 15th Street & E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix. For more information, see deliverforvotingrights.com, and #DeliverForVotingRights on Twitter.

Monday, January 17: Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday, observed.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s family is planning to commemorate the January federal holiday by pressuring Congress to pass federal voting rights legislation. “No celebration without legislation,” said Martin Luther King III, vowing to use his father’s memory to press Congress and the White House to get voting rights bills across the finish line. The D.C. Peace Walk begins on Monday, January 17th at 9:00 a.m., at
First Street SE & Potomac Avenue SE.
The King family is joined in their campaign by more than 75 groups, including including National Action Network, National Urban League, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, SEIU and MoveOn. Many of the groups have been lobbying for months for congressional action; King also led a March on Washington in August in support of federal voting legislation.
The family plans to march across bridges in Arizona and Washington, D.C., over the holiday weekend, a nod to the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. Two days later, family and supporters will march across the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in the nation’s capital before linking up with the annual D.C. Peace Walk to commemorate the holiday.
Arndrea Waters King noted that MLK Day is traditionally a national day of service and that there’s “no better way to observe the King holiday” than to stand for democracy and the rights of others.
“If we’re really talking about celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., voting rights was a cornerstone of his legacy,” adding that “we cannot simply in good faith celebrate him or celebrate that legacy with this current attack on access to the ballot box.”
