Juneteenth

Saturday, June 19: Juneteenth aka Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Hawaii is poised to become the 49th state to recognize Juneteenth. Hawaii close to honoring Juneteenth, leaving 1 state holdout. If Hawaii’s governor signs the bill, South Dakota would be the only remaining state that doesn’t recognize the day as either a state holiday or a day of observance. In February, both Senate and House lawmakers re-introduced the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
The Tucson Juneteenth Festival is still waiting to see if it can hold a live event again this year, or will be virtual like last year, because of COVID-19.
