According to statements in the report, there have been twelve presidents over the past 60 years, from F. D. Roosevelt to G. W. Bush who were all rated based on scholarly achievements, writings that they alone produced without aid of staff, their ability to speak with clarity, and several other psychological factors which were then scored in the Swanson/Crain system of intelligence ranking. The study determined the following IQs of each president as accurate to within five percentage points:
147Franklin D. Roosevelt (D)
132Harry Truman (D)
122Dwight D. Eisenhower (R)
174John F. Kennedy (D)
126Lyndon B. Johnson (D)
155Richard M. Nixon (R)
121Gerald R. Ford (R)
176James E. Carter (D)
105Ronald W. Reagan (R)
98George H. W. Bush (R)
182William J. Clinton (D)
91George W. Bush (R)
I have to wonder if there is a confirmation bias (wishful thinking) in this study. I mean, really, Johnson smarter than Eisenhower? Get real. But Jimmy Carter’s IQ is the only actual IQ score here; he released his IQ test scores to the public (that man is scary smart).
Purely based on subjective and completely unscientific criteria (call it a hunch), I would say that Truman is overrated, Eisenhower is way underrated, Kennedy is overrated, Ford is overrated, H.W. Bush is underrated, and W. Bush is way overrated (that man used to be pretty normal when he was Gov. of Texas, but now he’s high-function mentally-handicapped and couldn’t possibly be out of the 70s).
Since the fun here is to slap arbitrary and subjectively determined IQs on public figures, let’s do some potential future Presidents, shall we?
181 Albert Gore (always destined to be second to Bill)
225 Hillary Clinton (30 of Bill’s points were actually borrowed from Hillary)
180 Barrak Obama (same number of degrees he’s turned on running for President in ’08)
300 John Kerry (which is why normal folk can’t understand anything he says)
100 John Edwards (his score is actually 178, but he insisted that he only get an average score in solidarity with the common man)
148 John McCain (pre-hug)
91 John McCain (post-hug. It seems to have rubbed off…)
100 or 50 Mitt Romney (he can’t decide whether he’s an average blue or red stater)
119 Rudy Guilliani (reverse the score for a big surprise)
infinity Sam Brownback (God helped him on the test)
101 Newt Gingrich (blames Democrats for rigging the test, claims his actual score is higher than Brownback’s)

Sounds like a story from Ernesto Portillio and one of his immaginary friends folks.
“The report may be a hoax, but does that mean that it can’t be accurate, Lawrence??”
Fake but accurate? That DOES mean it cant be accurate. 182 for Clinton? Even Einstein’s IQ wasnt that high.
“yes GWB has two Ivy league ddegrees, but his grades were deiocle,”
But better grades than Kerry.
BTW: carter’s IQ was never released, it is part of the hoax
The report may be a hoax, but does that mean that it can’t be accurate, Lawrence??
As far as the article that you link: yes GWB has two Ivy league ddegrees, but his grades were deiocle, and had he not been a ‘legacy’ (see Animal House) it is doubtful that he would have made it very far in college.
I didn’t take the original “study” seriously either, but your followup was seriously funny. 🙂
Thanks for the heads up Lawrence, but nobody here was taking the ‘report’ too seriously, as should be readily apparent from my own additions to the ‘study’.
Lovenstein is a hoax.

Claim: According to a study by the Lovenstein Institute, President Bush has the lowest IQ of all presidents of past 50 years.
Status: False.
Origins: No, this isn’t a real news report, nor does it describe a real study. There isn’t a “Lovenstein Institute” in Scranton, Pennsylvania (or anywhere else in the USA), nor do any of the people quoted in the story exist, because this is just another spoof that was taken too seriously.
The article quoted above began circulating on the Internet during the summer of 2001. In furtherance of the hoax, later that year pranksters thought to register http://www.lovenstein.org and erect a web site around it in an attempt to fool people into thinking there really was such an institute.

Speaking of IQ’s, an actual study shows that Bush’s IQ is higher than John Kerry’s:
