Every day I see the result of people’s complete ignorance of their legal rights when dealing with the power of the state. People routinely confess freely to misbehavior not even under investigation, allow unwarranted searches, and are induced to arbitrage their own penal interests against their freedoms by clever police officers. Assuredly, many people who get jammed up are, in fact, criminals, who deserve what they get; but so many of them are just regular folks who do something stupid that doesn’t hurt anyone and end up paying far too much for thier mistakes.
