With the fortuitous Republican nomination of Ben Quayle in CD 3 — the least qualifed, least experienced candidate wounded by personal scandal and the legacy of his father — what was once considered a "safe" Republican seat in the past is now "in play" with a well-qualified and well-financed Democratic challenger, Jon Hulburd.
Note to the DCCC: move this race up on your list of target races.
I am beginning a new feature called "Quayle Hunt" (a play on words, no actual hunting implied or intended). Any actual "quail hunt" is a matter between Ben Quayle and Dick Cheney.
Let's begin with a few words from Ben's father:
"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is very wasteful. How true that is." – Dan Quayle
Here's what other Republicans are saying about Ben Quayle:
Paulina Morris: “Ben Quayle is the worst candidate in District 3, no experience, bad judgment.”
[TV ad, Aug. 17, 2010]
Pamela Gorman: “The kid has never voted in Arizona, he has had a job with a family business for a couple years — we laugh. It is like that show ‘Making Me,’ he moved to Arizona, he bought a house in my district last November, he got himself a wife, a dog, and he started taking pictures for his campaign brochures.”
[Strictly Right Radio, July 19, 2010]
Steve Moak: “He [Quayle] doesn't have the experience and maturity to deal with the issues we're facing as a nation.
[Fox News article, Aug. 12 2010]
Steve Moak: “Under pressure, Quayle changes his story and admits that he did write for the website using a fake name,” the ad intones. “Quayle said on the website, ‘My moral compass is so broken, I can barely find the parking lot.’
[Politico, Aug. 20, 2010]
Here is how his Democratic opponent Jon Hulburd welcomed Ben to the race:
“This election is now between Jon Hulburd and Brock Landers. It’s between a young man who fabricated a family, degraded women, and then tried to lie about it, and a small businessman and father of five who has been dedicated to his community. These concerns were raised by Republicans during the primary and at least 77% of Republican voters were unhappy with Ben Quayle’s response.”
For those of you who have not been following this story, Ben Quayle Is Brock Landers (the name of the fictional porn star Mark Walhberg played in the movie Boogie Nights) that young Ben posted under at the "raunchy" web site thedirty.com that some say is degrading to women (warning: link to thedirty.com).
Nik Ritchie, founder of that website, said Wednesday that the Republican nominee is not telling the whole truth about his contributions to the raunchy website site. TheDirty Founder: Ben Quayle Should Stop Lying:
Ritchie says Quayle needs to admit he wrote for the website under the name Brock Landers, a fictional porn star from the movie Boogie Nights.
"This is about telling the truth and being an honest person. If you say you're a family man be honest and say Ben Quayle is Brock Landers. How hard is that to say?"
This may turn out to be the most entertaining race in Arizona.

Far more amazing is Andrew Thomas saying that should Tom Horne beat him in the Republican primary that he will endorse him. I wonder if that means that would mean he is OK with supporting a guy he claimed supports taxpayer funding of abortion.
