Press release from the Grijlava for Congress campaign:

Tucson, Ariz. – After months of Rep. Tucson, Ariz. – After months of Rep. Raul Grijalva taking a leading role and rounding up support, 135 other Democrats joined him yesterday in sending a letter to President Obama pledging opposition to any Social Security cuts or increase in the retirement age. Grijalva's constant efforts to strengthen rather than weaken Social Security paid off in the letter enjoying the support of more than half the House Democratic Caucus, as reported in the Huffington Post:

136 Democrats, led by Reps. Raul Grijalva, John Conyers and Dan Maffei, sent a letter to President Obama today promising to oppose any deficit commission recommendations that include cuts to Social Security, raising the retirement age or any privatization scheme. Obama would need a coalition of conservative Democrats and Republicans, then, to approve such cuts.

Grijalva has been at the forefront of Congressional opposition to the president's deficit commission, which has operated largely in secret and is said to be considering cuts to Social Security in the name of deficit reduction. Grijalva called not once but twice for the removal of commission co-chair Alan Simpson, who called Social Security "a milk cow with 310 million tits" and told the former head of the National Older Women's League to "call when you get honest work!"

In fact, Social Security is legally barred from contributing to the deficit and cannot take on debt. Grijalva has called to eliminate the current $106,800 cap above which no one currently pays Social Security taxes, which would indefinitely extend the life of the program.

In contrast to Grijalva's steadfast leadership on Social Security, GOP challenger Ruth McClung has repeatedly disparaged it, once calling it a Ponzi scheme and on another occasion writing, "There is no such thing as Social Security." When McClung acknowledges the program's existence, she advocates privatizing it and has never detailed how or whether she thinks Social Security will play an important role in future generations' retirements.

Grijalva has been endorsed for re-election by the Alliance for Retired Americans, which has more than 4 million members nationwide and 36,500 in District Seven.
