Last week, Florida Rep. Scott Randolph (D-Orlando) suggested that his wife "incorporate her uterus" so that Republicans would stop their relentless attacks on abortion rights. The logic was, of course, that Republicans would never permit similar regulation of Florida businesses.
Randolph's comment inspired the Florida American Civil Liberties Union to launch a website, called "Incorporate My Uterus" which allows women to fill out and print a certificate which reads, "When a corporation has more protections than a woman, the best way to keep lawmakers out of your business is to be your own business." Maybe then, the site description continues, "your uterus can get the same treatment corporations get – fewer rules, fewer government searches and more personal freedoms."
Amelia Thompson-DeVeaux posts a copy of the certificate at her blog post Protect Your Reproductive Rights – Incorporate Your Uterus!
This may seem like a joke – but in fact it's a clever take on a real and serious problem. Republicans do seem to be far more concerned with corporations' rights than women's rights, and this shows – through parody – the horrible lengths to which abortion restrictions are being taken on a state level.
So go for it – "incorporate" your uterus on the ACLU's website and tell politicians to give you the basic rights that they so freely dispense to corporations. Soon, men will be able to incorporate an honorary uterus too!
