Republicans, After Feeling the Heat from Musk and Trump, Renege on a Bipartisan Short Term Budget Agreement

To all the people who thought Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Elon Musk were better for the American Government than Kamala Harris and Tim Walz despite their track records, this potential government shutdown is thanks to you.

After reaching a bipartisan agreement with Congressional Democratic Leadership on a continuing resolution funding bill that would pay for federal government expenses until March including much needed disaster relief and farm aid, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson appears to be, according to reporting from the Washington Post, “back at the drawing board” after social media outbursts by Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Elon Musk, gave cover to both House and Senate Republicans to renege on the deal.

Johnson is also, thanks to this rebellion, in danger of not being re-elected to the Speakership.

How many Republican speakers would that make in just over two years with them in control?

Talk about party dysfunction.

Among the posts Musk (remember he was not elected to anything) made on his platform, X, against the deal, were:

Good luck with keeping the government shut down that long. The last time this happened was in 2018 and Donald Trump had to retreat from his hardline position on funding the border wall before the shutdown ended.

This is more unappealing because there will be a change in Presidential Administrations.

Trump and Vance, the President and Vice President-Elects, followed Musk’s lead (again, he was not elected to anything) and posted:

President Joe Biden has deferred on the budget negotiations to Congressional Leadership.

He should stay out of this and let Republicans own this looming fiscal catastrophe if they choose to go this destructive route.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries commented on the Republican reneging on the bipartisan agreement that would provide needed funds for disaster relief and assistance to farmers and all groups:

“House Republicans have now unilaterally decided to break a bipartisan agreement that they made. House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government and hurt everyday Americans all across this country. House Republicans will now own any harm that is visited upon the American People that results from a government shutdown or worse. An agreement is an agreement. It was bipartisan and there is nothing more to say.”

So much for delivering to everyday Americans.

Republicans created this mess. They need to find a solution that will get Democratic votes. Even if they take the moronic approach of waiting until January 20, 2025, they will, thanks to their narrow numbers, probably still need Democratic votes to get this passed.

Stay Tuned.
