Republicans running away from the Ryan budget plan – don’t let them off the hook

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Roadmap_ruinLike the Ancient Mariner, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is now burdened with an albatross round his neck. His "Ryan Roadmap to America's Ruin," the foundation for the Tea-Publican budget, has proven deeply unpopular with the American people and Rep. Ryan himself, heretofore little known outside of his native Wisconsin, is now the most unpopular Republican in Washington (only Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin are more unpopular).

The GOP's alleged boy genius is now so toxic that Republicans Back Away From The Ryan Plan:

Not only is he one of the least popular member of his party and Congress, but his Randian wet dream budget plan–declared the litmus test for all Republicans this election–isn't fooling most Americans. So much so that even Ryan is backing away from it.

And now politicians aspiring to join the Republicans on the national scene have to figure out a way to be for the Ryan plan to satisfy the party leadership and yet not be for a plan that most Americans hate.

* * *

[P]erhaps the most telling episode came from Florida Republican Mike Haridopolos, who appeared on the conservative Ray Junior radio show in Orlando and gave such mealy-mouthed answers with the typical politician filibuster to issues he did want to talk about that even Junior got fed up and kicked him off his show.

Lawrence O'Donnell did a great job of describing the GOP flight from the Ryan plan in this segment of Rewriting Paul Ryan's sabotoage.

This should be the rallying cry for all Democrats as we near the election: demand that Republicans declare their support for destroying Medicare as we know it with the Ryan budget plan (a litmus test among Tea-Publicans). No questioner should let them off the hook with the cowardly dodge "that's a hypothetical question." No more stealth candidates who say nothing of importance only to vote in lockstep for a radical extremist agenda once elected. Make the Ryan plan an albatross round their neck.

  1. lezli yslas is playing Chicken Little: “The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling!”

    Problem is, the Medicare Trustees Report has been predicting imminent insolvency every year for the last 40 years. Go to this report titled “Part A Insolvency Trust Fund Projection” from the Congressional Research Service and look at the table on page 5 showing the 40 year history the projected dates of insolvency: http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/files/medicare14.pdf

    Or read the blog from a writer at the Chicago Tribune who collected headlines since 1969 from major newspapers – NYTimes, LATimes, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, etc–reporting on when exactly the sky is projected to fall: http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2011/05/medicare-is-going-bankrupt-again.htm

    Funny thing is, it never has! Chicken Little hasn’t been right, not once, in the last 40 years. Even funnier is the spectacle of the Republicans now backing away from the Ryan plan, the plan they just voted on, to voucherize Medicare. Americans are lot more scared of being left to the tender mercies of private insurance companies than they are of Medicare Part A going broke.
