Yeah, I know, I'm a nag. But Christmas has come and gone and New Years is almost upon us. It's time to get out those last minute checks or online credit card payments to the public school of your choice: $200 per individual, $400 filing jointly. You have to fill out the form or have your letter postmarked by December 31 to get the credit when you file your AZ tax return.
I just sent off my check — I had to nag myself too. I made an unusual choice and sent it to Sky Islands Charter High School, on Wilmot just south of Broadway. I spent a morning at the school a few weeks ago along with Rep. Nancy Young Wright. It's doing what I think charters should do: pursuing a vision of a school that offers an alternative to education as usual. It's not connected with Sky Island Alliance in any way, but the school has a similar dedication to the environment of the southwest. Traditional academics are mixed together with an emphasis on environmental issues and sustainability.
The school is reasonably new and is at that difficult stage where it has its mission and curriculum in place but needs more students. I'm rooting for it to succeed.
Give where you wish, but give — and get it all back. What a deal! Here are the tax credit web pages for most of our local school districts.
