She is back.
After failing in the battle of extremists for the Republican nomination for Arizona Secretary of State, Shawnna Bolick, a noted 2020 election denier is retiring to the State Legislature after being appointed by the Maricopa County of Supervisors to complete the term of retiring State Senator Steve Kaiser in Legislative District (LD) Two.
A wife of State Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick and reported friend of Ginni and Justice Clarence Thomas, Ms. Bolick is remembered for authoring legislation supporting the Independent State Legislature Theory (overturned recently by the United States Supreme Court when officials in North Carolina attempted to change electioral law with the same postulate,) of overturning elections.
Elsa O’Callaghan, the Executive Director of the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (ADLCC,) stated, in a release on Bolick’s appointment:
“Shawnna Bolick has a long history in Arizona of pushing baseless conspiracy theories about our elections. Her record of aiming to overturn the will of the voters and undermining our democracy is demonstrative of how she fails to truly listen to Arizonans at the ballot box. We expect that in 2024 voters will choose to elect a Senator that is working to ensure all Arizonans have the opportunity to thrive over a candidate in a shameless pursuit of power.”
Bolick’s likely opponent, should she decide to run for the State Senate in her own right, in the 2024 election, Representative Judy Schwiebert, responded to a request for comment to Blog for Arizona by taking the professional high road on the appointment, offering:
“I’m deeply committed and focused on delivering real solutions so that all Arizonans can thrive, alongside all of my colleagues both Republican and Democrat. I look forward to finding common ground with newly appointed Sen. Bolick as I did with Senator Kaiser.”
Currently, LD Two is considered by most observers as one of the major swing districts in the 2024 elections that can determine which political party controls the Arizona State Legislature in 2025.
