Senator Mark Kelly and Others Propose Permanent Tax Cuts for Working Class Americans

Offering a fiscally responsible proposal that sharply contrasts with the debt-busting, wealthy-targeted Big Billionaires First Bill passed with only Republican votes last year, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, along with Senate colleagues Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, Andy Kim, Chris Van Hollen, and Representative Don Beyer, have introduced the Working Americans Tax Cut Act.

If passed, this measure would provide vital and deserved tax relief for 130 million working and middle-class Americans at a time when Trump/Vance/Republican economic and global mismanagement is causing a surge in prices that makes it increasingly difficult for these people to make ends meet.

Key components of the legislation include:

  • Elimination of federal tax obligations for Americans who earn about $46,000 a year.
  • Tax Relief for those who make between $46,000 and $80,500 with married couples eligible for more.
  • Paying for this working-class tax relief by installing a surtax on individuals who make more than a million dollars.

In a press release, Arizona’s senior Senator wrote:

Families across Arizona are working hard and doing everything right, but still falling behind. Instead of helping them get ahead, Trump gave more huge tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans while hiking up prices on everyone else. Our plan is to put more money in the pockets of middle-class Americans—from nurses and teachers to firefighters and electricians—and restore the basic promise that in this country, hard work pays off.”

In the below social media post, Senator Kelly said:

Rich people don’t need another tax cut, but you know who does? You do. I’m working to get it done, and make sure it’s paid for by making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share. It’s the exact opposite of what Trump did.

Trump gave his rich friends a giant tax cut paid for by cutting Americans’ health care. It’s hard for working families to get ahead right now. Everything costs too much.

Groceries, gas, health care, rent, let alone a down payment on a house or saving for your kids’ education. Make no mistake, the system is working. It’s just not working for you.

So here’s my plan. The Working Americans Tax Cut Act, which I’m introducing with Senator Van Hollen, will put money back in the pockets of working and middle-class families. And here’s how this works by the numbers.

If you make less than $46,000 a year, which is the national medium income, you won’t have to pay any federal income tax. And if you make up to $80,500 a year, or are a married couple making less than $161,000 per year, you get a tax cut. And it’s fully paid for with a tax on people making millions of dollars a year.

In other words, you get to keep more of what you earn, and the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share. It’s time to reward work over wealth in this country again. So I hope you’ll join us in supporting the Working Americans Tax Cut Act.”

Later on MSNOW to discuss Trump and his team’s mismanagement of the war against Iran, Kelly said of his tax cut proposal for Working-Class Americans:

“It’s about correcting some of the things that the President did last year with his Big, Beautiful Bill. Seventy-four percent of the tax savings, the benefit of that legislation, went to millionaires and billionaires. People at the bottom got barely any help.

And by the way, the help they (the poor and middle class) got expires in twenty twenty eight, where the help for billionaires continues permanently. So that legislation was a bad deal for hard-working Americans. Hey, when I grew up, you know, hard work paid off.

It doesn’t pay off anymore. I mean, who it pays off for us, a middle-class person’s hard work pays off for the wealthiest Americans. So this legislation is about giving a tax break for middle class families.

If you pay if you make forty six thousand dollars a year, you’re not going to pay any tax. If you are a single person who makes eighty thousand or a family one hundred sixty-one thousand dollars a year, you’re going to get a tax break, and it’s paid for. I mean, this isn’t deficit spending, which is what the President’s bill that he calls his Big, Beautiful Bill that was paid for by running up the national debt.

This is paid for, you know, just by making people at the top pay a little bit more in taxes to help folks at the bottom so they can get some relief, so they can pay their rent, you know, maybe save for a down payment for a house, help their kids pay for college, maybe go on a vacation someday. It brings some sense of fairness to our tax system, which right now is just skewed in favor of the wealthiest Americans.”

The Senator also discussed his proposal to suspend the federal gas tax until October.

  1. Great idea! Do this in conjunction with raising taxes on the wealthy to ensure they pay their fair share. And to make sure they pay their fair share institute a flat non-negotiable tax on incomes exceeding a million dollars a year.
