SWAG Update: Early Filers for 2010

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Time once again to update the early filers with the Arizona Secretary of State for 2010. You can play along at home at http://www.azsos.gov/cfs/CommitteeSearch.aspx

Since the last update, Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker, a Republican, has been receiving a lot of media attention as he explores running for goveror PV mayor forms exploratory panel on run for governor, not all of it welcome PV Mayor Vernon Parker: Accused by Feds of false filing « Seeing Red AZ. State Treasurer Dean Martin, a Republican, is also considering running for governor State Treasurer Dean Martin considers a run for governor. Former Arizona Republican Party Chairman and Republican National Commiteeman John Munger told Bill Buckmaster of KUAT's Arizona Illustrated on Monday that he is leaving the segment "Face Off" and would have an announcement shortly about a new direction in his life, looking like the cat who swallowed the canary. [UPDATE 10/3/09: Ex-leader of Ariz. GOP enters race for governor] Yeah, no surprise here, I reported months ago that Munger will run for governor. Disgraced former Arizona Governor J. Fife Symington III, a Republican, is also considering running for governor again. Symington 'thinking seriously' about run for governor For the love of God, why? And polarizing Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a Republican, is said to be considering running for governor. Arpaio may be considering run for governor – Phoenix Business Journal; Arpaio’s dislike of Goddard propels look at governor run – Phoenix Business Journal

Finally, Attorney General Terry Goddard did not file an exploratory committee in June as anticipated. Goddard can afford to wait now that his chief rivals Jim Pederson, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, and Rep. David Bradley have all backed away from a run, leaving former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano, a Republican turned Democrat, and little known Benjamin Jankowski exploring a primary run.

The race for attorney general is heating up with Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas having filed his exploratory committee as anticipated. Arizona Capitol Times » Blog Archive » Thomas files exploratory committee to run for AG Democrat Felecia Ann Rotellini, a former assistant Attorney General, has filed an exploratory committee to run for attorney general. Ex-prosecutor enters attorney-general race. And Democrat Vince Rabago, a current assistant Attorney General, received a nice write up in the Arizona Capitol Times Rabago will decide on AG race by year’s end.

[Update 10/2/09: Attorney Michael Manning, a registered independent, is exploring registering as a Democrat to run for Attoerney General. He is best known for successful legal battles with Fife Symington, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Charles Keating. Manning weighs race for attorney general]

Republican Sen. Thayer Verschoor reportedly is running for State Treasurer. Verschoor could run for state treasurer I guess this means current State Treasurer Dean Martin will be running for governor.

It's looking like a heated GOP primary for senate in LD 4 and LD 7, and the house in LD 7. What's up with that?

There has been an extraordinary number of early candidate filings this year for 2010. I do not recall ever seeing this many early filers. Many of the ranked contenders, however, may not file until as late as January of 2010 because of Arizona's "resign to run" law. So the early filers are not necessarily indicative of who's in and who's out for 2010. Some of the early filers have not even designated what office they are seeking.

A word of caution, the list below does not distinguish between an "exploratory committee" and a "candidate committee." "NP" indicates no party affilliation designated on the face of the filing.

So who is out there exploring if not actually running for office in 2010?

  1. BlueMeanine,
If you use the campaign finance system and search for active committees for LD30, it looks like Antenori filed for the State House on January 5th, 2009.

The committee he opened on September 29th seems to be a constituent services account, not the campaign account.

  2. A couple of names jump out at me…

1.) Steve Yarbrough has the audacity to make a run for the senate? I cannot believe the cajones and arrogance of this man. Hopefully voters in LD 21 will not put up with a slimy legislator representing them!

2.) Tom Horne–Attorney General… He’s has no clue about our educational system and how to effectively run it, now he wants us to trust him with the state? Is he out of his mind? He is unbelievable.

3.) New Super of Public Instruction: I have heard great things about both Penny Kotterman – Democrat and Gary Nine – Republican. But Huppenthal, seriously? He votes against public education every time! This is only a stepping stone to a higher office–just like Tom Horne.

And Anternori…what a disaster. Clueless and ideological.
