Twitter-troll-in-chief threatens to abandon Americans in Puerto Rico

This is worse than George W. Bush’s clueless neglect of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. This is purposeful, intentional abandonment of Americans out of pure spite for having criticized the “Dear Leader” and his relief efforts in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Who does this? Trump threatens to abandon Puerto Rico recovery effort:

President Trump served notice Thursday that he may pull back federal relief workers from Puerto Rico, effectively threatening to abandon the U.S. territory amid a staggering humanitarian crisis in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Declaring the U.S. territory’s electrical grid and infrastructure to have been a “disaster before hurricanes,” Trump wrote Thursday that it will be up to Congress how much federal money to appropriate to the island for its recovery efforts and that recovery workers will not stay “forever.”

In a trio of tweets, Trump wrote” “We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!”

Trump on Saturday blasted San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, whom he accused of “poor leadership ability,” as well as “others in Puerto Rico” who Trump claimed “want everything to be done for them.”

“The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” he tweeted.

On Saturday, she tweeted, “The goal is one: saving lives. This is the time to show our “true colors”. We cannot be distracted by anything else.”

Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico begs for help: ‘We are dying here’ (Updated)

Our always insecure egomaniacal Twitter-troll-in-chief continues to focus on his administration’s “reviews” of its response to the humanitarian disaster in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, complaining that the press is insufficiently adulatory of “Dear Leader,”  while at the same time shifting blame for the inadequate relief response to the island citizens themselves.

Dear Leader’s never-ending need for self-congratulation and adulation permeates his entire administration, including Elaine Duke, the acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Secretary, who said Thursday the relief effort on the island is “a good news story” with necessary supplies being delivered and federal agencies working hard to distribute those goods.

Wow, was that ever tone-deaf and not at all reflective of the actual situation on the ground. Acting secretary Duke was forced to “clarify” and to walk back her misguided statement today. After criticism, acting homeland security chief admits humanitarian situation in Puerto Rico ‘is not satisfactory.

The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Carmen Yulín Cruz, when told of Duke’s statement, was at first incredulous and then got angry. Video.

Humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands is becoming Trump’s ‘Katrina’ (updated)

While our always insecure egomaniacal Twitter-troll-in-chief has been busy this past week race-baiting professional athletes to shore up his white nationalist base, Trump’s N.F.L. Critique a Calculated Attempt to Shore Up His Base, or tweeting taunts threatening to “totally destroy” North Korea bringing us closer to war, or blaming Sen. John McCain for his own failure to follow through on his campaign promise to repeal “Obamacare,” Donald Trump has largely been silent about the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

It was not until Monday night, after taking a beating on the cable news networks all day for his lack of empathy and attention to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Trump finally must have realized that residents of these islands are U.S. Citizens. Trump declares Puerto Rico is in ‘deep trouble’ as questions mount about his commitment:

President Trump, facing mounting questions about his commitment to Puerto Rico’s recovery, took to Twitter on Monday night, saying the U.S. territory is “in deep trouble,” in part because of problems that predated Hurricane Maria.

Monday night’s tweets were the first from Trump about Puerto Rico since Wednesday, when the hurricane made landfall and Trump declared “we are with you.”

Democrats rescue the country, for now — see you in December

So Conservatives mounted opposition to Trump’s deal with Democrats, but failed to stop it in the Senate:

Conservative lawmakers voiced their opposition to President Trump’s deal with Democratic congressional leaders, arguing the three-month government spending bill that also raises the debt ceiling should not be passed because it does not include federal spending cuts.

The chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee objected to the agreement in a letter to House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), while Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) proposed an amendment to pass relief for Hurricane Harvey victims as a stand-alone bill in the upper chamber, decoupled from debates over federal spending and the debt ceiling.

The moves came just as news broke that Trump and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) are working on a separate deal that would repeal the debt ceiling by DecemberMy God, he’s giving up our hostage! — another betrayal by the president that would erase one of the few points of leverage conservatives have to extract spending cuts during high-stakes fiscal debates.

Opponents failed to derail the package combining $15.25 billion in Harvey aid with a temporary debt-ceiling hike and funding to keep the government open until Dec. 8. The Senate passed it on Thursday afternoon, sending it back to the House for final approval.

The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 80 to 17. All “no” votes were Republicans. Arizona Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain both voted “no.” (This was a “safety” vote — it was going to pass by a safe margin so they could afford to be dicks about it).
