Odaiko Sonora taiko drummers will be performing at 3:15 p.m.. Our Southern AZ Japanese Cultural Coalition (of which I am the website Editor) will have a table. I’ll be teaching how to play a Japanese card game called hanafuda (flower cards). Please drop by to say hello & learn about our Japanese culture and listen to the speech contest.

This event is organized by the SAAJE:  Southern Arizona Assn. for Japanese Education, www.saaje.org. Previous contests have been held at various PCC campuses.

On January 10, 2015 the Southern Arizona Japanese Cultural Coalition (SAJCC) sponsored their 2nd Annual mochi pounding celebration for the new Year of the Sheep.  Here are photos of that lively event, held at the Rhythm Industry Performance Factory, home of Odaiko Sonora (taiko drummers), 1013 S. Beautiful kimono exhibit opening at Yume Japanese Gardens

Kimonos made with exceptional skill from fine materials have long been regarded as great works of textile art, often hand painted, embroidered, or brocaded and sometimes costing thousands of dollars. Join us to view nearly two dozen examples of the traditional Japanese robe, ornamented with beautiful painterly designs.

This exhibition runs from Oct. 1 to Nov. 23 and admission to it is included with entrance to the Gardens. Accompanying the exhibition is a permanent display of 19th-century woodblock prints depicting scenes of daily life in pre-modern Japan.

Japanese Speech Contest in 12th year

Mark your calendars for the upcoming 12th Annual Japanese Language Speech Contest on 4/26/14, from noon-5:00 p.m. at Pima Community College NW Campus, 7600 N. Shannon Rd. , Building G. Students studying the Japanese language in middle, high and college level compete for prizes.

The afternoon features: speech contest, cosplay contest (first ever), exhibitions and performances. You don’t want to miss it. Odaiko Sonora taiko drummers and Suzuyuki Kai traditional Japanese dance group will be performing.
