This past week we had some fun with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) in Teh Stupid:
In a press conference today, Cantor promised to present the "Prevention of a Government Shutdown Act" on the House floor on Friday. He said, "that will say to the American people: the Senate's got to act, prior to the expiration of the CR. If it doesn't not act, HR 1 becomes the law of the land."
Errrr…as School House Rocks or any other American kid can tell you, that's not how it works.
Everyone thought it was just Eric Cantor making a fool of himself with foot-in-mouth disease. My mistake. It turns out it is almost the entire Tea-Publican Congressional Caucus that believes in this fantastical nonsense.
Jed Lewison reports at Daily Kos House repasses funding bill previously rejected by Senate and calls it progress:
House Republicans [on Friday] passed the exact same funding bill that they passed in February. You know, the funding bill that the Senate has already voted down.
The only difference? This time they called it the "Government Shutdown Prevention Act." But when you repass the exact same thing that has already failed, you're not actually preventing the shutdown of anything.
That's right. These fools believe that the Tea-Publican Congress acting alone can enact a law, thus jettisoning the Senate and the Executive branch and a good size chunk of the U.S. Constitution. The authoritarianism of this Tea-Publican tyranny is making them all crazy.
Since the School House Rock video "I'm a Bill On Capitol Hill" did not correct their obvious lack of a civics education, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) decided to school the Tea-Publican members of the Congress with the children's book "House Mouse, Senate Mouse" sold at all Capitol Hill gift shops. DownWithTyranny!: House Mouse/Senate Mouse– Eric Cantor Gets A Lesson On The Constitition From Anthony Weiner (D-NY):
[Eric] Cantor and his Confederate colleagues are under the bizarre impression– and narrowly passed a resolution to that effect Friday– that if the Senate doesn't pass their spending bill by April 6, their spending bill becomes the law of the land. Weiner may have been a little sharp with the poor boys and girls, but they really do need to read House Mouse/Senate Mouse or, perhaps take a little course in American Government 101.
Here's where things really got bizarre. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), probably the craziest member of Congress hands down, broke with his party and said on the floor that this aspect of the bill "violates my conscious and the Constitution, and I cannot vote for it." Louie Gohmert was the voice of reason in the Tea-Publican Congressional Caucus. Think about that for a moment, folks.
Democratic leaders echoed Gohmert throughout the day, and argued that the prospect of deeming H.R. 1 as U.S. law is a serious violation of the founding document of the United States.
"What you see on the floor today is no example of Democracy in action," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said. "It's silly. The Republican leadership is asking its members to make a silly vote."
"April Fools, America," House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said. "This is a joke, America. This is not real, America."
Yet the Tea-Publicans may use their meaningless Government Shutdown Prevention Act as a stage prop to actually shut down the government this week.
I told you some time ago that the Tea-Publican Congress would agree to short-term continuing resolutions (CR) only long enough to get them to Tax Day where they could use the threat of a government shut down and Tax Day for a Tea Party media event. FAUX News has had their graphics and chyrons and "canned" reports ready to go for weeks now, if not months already. This is all part of a highly coordinated and highly scripted media campaign by the right-wing noise machine and its Billionaires' Coup corporate-funded Tea Party front groups.
The Crazyland Express has left the station.
