The New York Times today has an investigative report that looks at the Affordable Care Act aka “ObamaCare” one year later. the Times piece asks: Is the Affordable Care Act Working?
After a year fully in place, the Affordable Care Act has largely succeeded in delivering on President Obama’s main promises, an analysis by a team of reporters and data researchers shows. But it has also fallen short in some ways and given rise to a powerful conservative backlash.
- Has the percentage of uninsured people been reduced? Yes, the number of uninsured has fallen significantly.
- Has insurance under the law been affordable? For many, yes, but not for all.
- Did the Affordable Care Act improve health outcomes? Data remains sparse except for one group, the young.
- Will the online exchanges work better this year than last? Most experts expect they will, but they will be tested by new challenges.
- Has the health care industry been helped or hurt by the law? The law mostly helped, by providing new paying patients and insurance customers.
- How has the expansion of Medicaid fared? Twenty-three states have opposed expansion, though several of them are reconsidering.
- Has the law contributed to a slowdown in health care spending? Perhaps, but mainly around the edges.
Each topic section goes into greater detail with facts, figures and lots of charts.
The next enrollment period begins November 15. From Healthcare.gov:
Mark your calendar! 4 important dates to know
If you haven’t been back to HealthCare.gov in a while, it’s time to change that. Come back and apply for 2015 coverage on or after November 15th.
We can help you get ready for the next Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment Period.
Open Enrollment is the time when you can find a new Marketplace plan, keep your current plan, or see if you can get help paying for coverage. If you want to make sure you’re covered in 2015, mark these 4 dates on your calendar:
- November 15, 2014. This is your first day to apply for, keep, or change your coverage.
- December 15, 2014. Enroll by the 15th if you want new coverage that begins on January 1, 2015. If your plan is changing or you want to change plans, enroll by December 15th to avoid a lapse in coverage.
- December 31, 2014. The day all 2014 Marketplace coverage ends, no matter when you enrolled. Coverage for 2015 plans can start as soon as January 1st.
- February 15, 2015. The last day you can enroll in 2015 coverage before the end of Open Enrollment.
So save the dates and share them with your friends and family — because no one should miss out on affordable health coverage just because they missed the deadline.

More inconvenient truth.

Or these promises?
“If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.”
“If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.”
“I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits—either now or in the future.”
Exactly what I mean.

Just because you don’t like that more people have health insurance and piece of mind, doesn’t mean that it’s not a good thing. Just going to keep getting better and better!
“Just because you don’t like that more people have health insurance and piece of mind,…..”
How old are you, 12?
Apparently things have changed since August.

No, I’m not 12 and we can go at this over and over if you’d like. I got nothing but time and facts on my side.

Your comment is what comes out when facts don’t matter.
“In an Obama administration, we’ll lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year….. We’ll do it by the end of my first term as President of the United States.”
“I can make a firm pledge, under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”
Are you referring to these promises?
I am glad to hear this. I was disappointed with everything I was hearing about Obamacare being a failure. I am pleased to know it is more of a success than I realized. I hope it makes more progress in the coming year.
More facts…this law is making a huge difference, in a positive way, for so many
individuals and families.
