Groups seeking to recall Gov. Scott Walker submitted nearly twice as many signatures Tuesday as required to force an election, an overwhelming number that may make a vote later this year inevitable.

The 1 million signatures that United Wisconsin, the coalition that spearheaded the effort along with the Democratic Party, said were collected far exceeds the 540,208 needed and amounts to 23 percent of the state's eligible voters.

Petitioners were also submitting about 305,000 more signatures than were needed to trigger a recall election against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and said they also exceeded the number needed to force recall elections of four Republican state senators, including Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald.

The Government Accountability Board has said its review will take 60 days or more and it will go to court this week to seek more than the 31 days allowed under the law.

Tate said he didn't expect a Walker recall election would happen before May. Walker has said he thinks it will be in June.

More from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Democrats to file 1 million signatures for Walker recall – JSOnline:

The sheer number of signatures being filed – nearly as many as the total votes cast for Walker in November 2010 [According to official election results, Walker got 1,128,941 votes (52.25%), while Barrett got 1,004,303 votes (46.48%)], and almost twice as those needed to trigger a recall election – ensure the election will be held, said officials with the state Democratic Party and United Wisconsin, the group that launched the Walker recall.

"It is beyond legal challenge," said Ryan Lawler, vice chairman of United Wisconsin.

Former U.S. Rep. Dave Obey, who has been in state politics for a half-century, called the recall effort "an amazing development."

Tate said volunteers had gathered even more signatures for other senators – over 21,000 for Pam Galloway of Wausau, over 21,000 for Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls and over 24,000 for Van Wanggaard of Racine.

State Sen. Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) has said he will run against Walker if a recall election is held, and other Democrats are expected to get in the race. Potential candidates include Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who lost to Walker in 2010; former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk; and former U.S. Rep. Dave Obey.

Polling released Tuesday showed that Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett leads all Democratic contenders in a possible primary to pick a challenger to Walker.

I just want to take a moment to say how proud I am of my brothers and sisters in Wisconsin labor unions, and the Wisconsin Democratic Party. They are showing the world that we will not be subjugated by Tea-Publican tyranny and that we can and will fight back for the American middle-class and our democracy. Screw the billionaire bastard Koch brothers and their dream of a corporatocracy. On Wisconsin!

If only we had this kind of organization and fighting spirit in Arizona — just imagine what we could do.
