The Phoenix Business Journal reports that J.D. Hayworth considers Senate run:
Conservative radio commentator and former Scottsdale congressman J.D. Hayworth is considering a run against U.S. Sen. John McCain in next year’s Republican primary.
A source in Arizona who asked not to be identified said Hayworth is pondering the move.
J.D. regularly uses his afternoon radio talk show on KFYI-AM 550 to bash John McCain and threaten to run against him in the GOP primary. This is news how?
The Neocon Washington Post's Chris Cilizza also reported the speculation in his column The Fix:
Hayworth Considers McCain Primary Challenge: Former representative J.D. Hayworth is weighing a candidacy against Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) in 2010, according to sources familiar with his thinking. Hayworth, a former sportscaster who spent more than a decade in Congress before he was defeated in 2006 by Rep. Harry Mitchell (D), is a popular figure among grassroots conservatives — a status McCain has never courted or achieved. McCain already faces a primary challenge from Chris Simcox, a founder of the Minutemen — a leading anti-immigration group. While there is considerable resentment from some grassroots conservatives toward McCain, it's not clear that he is vulnerable to a primary challenge. McCain ended June with $4.65 million in the bank.
J.D. Hayworth is fat and happy living the easy life collecting a fat paycheck for being a loud-mouthed gas bag for a few hours a day on conservative talk radio. He is not going to give up the easy life to run a hard-fought primary campaign against John McCain. J.D. doesn't have the cojones to run against McCain. He will continue to collect his fat paycheck and live the easy life being a loud-mouthed gas bag on conservative talk radio, still bashing John McCain from the comfort of his broadcast studio.
UPDATE 10/8/09: The editors of the Arizona Republic do not think much either of J.D. Hayworth's A lot of bluster; A lot of blarney:
Media celebrities have a long history of using their notoriety to gin up support for running for public office, including Congress. We are thinking of one right now who is using his job as a professional talker to make listeners believe he is thinking real seriously about running in a primary race against incumbent Sen. John McCain. Call us dubious, but we really don't think he is playing square with Gertie from Glendale.
McCain has more than $4 million in campaign cash and a global reputation under his belt. The guy we're thinking of has a bundle of bluster and a steady paycheck that perhaps gets bigger if he jacks up his listener base with a lot of wink-wink about challenging McCain.
We are thinking, too, that he has assured his bosses at the radio station – who surely would not relish a call from the Federal Elections Commission about their drive-time host running a political campaign on their airwaves – that it really is all in fun.

I’ll just mention that since JD Hayworth had gastric bypass surgery, presumably he is not as fat as he used to be.
