This week, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego participated in two events designed to enhance the lives of children and their families.
The Mayor first attended the opening ceremonies of the STEM Cafe Program for Phoenix area schools on March 28, 2023.
The program, developed by School Connect in partnership with the City of Phoenix Youth and Education Commission, is:
“…designed to benefit school districts throughout Arizona. The program aims to bridge the gap between STEM industries and schools and encourage more students to pursue careers in these fields. The STEM Cafe initiative, which brings together six school districts and more than 30 STEM partners, offers students an opportunity to work on collaborative projects with leaders in these high-demand fields.”
Commenting on the program, Mayor Gallego posted on social media:

Two days later, on March 30, 2023, the Mayor, along with Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari and other local leaders attended the opening of the Cesar Chavez Community Center at 7858 S 35th Ave in Laveen. A 34,000 square foot facility, this new center includes “a new fitness center, basketball court, gaming room, multipurpose room, kitchen, sensory room, and outdoor movie theater.”
The grand opening was timed to occur the day before the famed Civil Rights Leaders 96th birthday.
The day before, Ms. Gallego joyfully posted the coming of the event, a project she had committed to since her first election to the City Council.
In her comments at the grand opening, the Mayor said:
“To the Chavez Family, we think we have built a community center that is worthy of the legacy. This is going to be a showpiece for our city and for Laveen…We put inclusivity at the forefront. This building really shows our values and welcomes a wonderful sensory center for people who are neural diverse. Know that they are welcomed and valued in this community…our young people are really welcome here and they’re going to have a fun and safe place…This comes as we celebrate Cesar Chavez and his legacy…we’re asking everyone (with the city offices closed for Chavez’s birthday on March 31,) to not have a day off but a day in honor of service of Cesar Chavez and his legacy…Today we celebrate, it has happened…We hope it (the community center) will grow and adapt. We expect a senior center to become a future part of Laveen…We continue to invest. There is no community that has benefited more from our parks and preserve initiative and we are going to continue to make sure that our young people and all of our residents really feel the benefits of supports from our great (Phoenix)Parks Department.”
During the event, the Mayor also showcased her basketball skills.
