Trump recent signed a new defense agreement with Qatar, elevating it to a major Non-NATO ally with security guarantees that commit the United States to a similar level as our closest allies.
Why? What is the national interest in doing so? Why are we guaranteeing the security of a repressive and bloated absolute monarchy whose largest export is natural gas… to China? It’s true we have a gigantic air base in the country, but why would we guarantee that any attack, anywhere in Qatar will be treated as an attack on “the peace and security of the United States”? Our prior status of forces agreement and security guarantees to Qatar were perfectly adequate for the past two decades. What has changed?
Basically, nothing has changed and there is no compelling reason. A security analyst could and likely would justify the status change by pointing to recent strikes on Qatar by Israel (Trump humiliated Prime Minister Netanyahu by signing the Qatari gaurantee the same day he hosted Bibi at the White House, and forced him to appologize to the Qataris – one hardly has to wonder why he doesn’t use his influence over Israel to end the genocidal war on Gaza…) and the well telegraphed and pro forma strike our Al Udeid airbase by Iran in response to our bunker buster attack on Iran’s nuclear program. These circumstances don’t justify or explain our motives for the change in status to very near our committments to NATO, however. These deveopments explain the reasons why Qatar would WANT such a guarantee, but it doesn’t explain the benefit to America’s national interest in granting it.
The real benefit and motive of this Administration is Trump’s and his cronies personal interests. Trump has sold the might and prestige of the United States to Qatar to benefit himself. There is zero real additional security benefit to Americans from this agreement. Just the opposite, in fact; it potentially pulls us back into Middle East politics and conflicts that Amerians have wanted to extricate ourselves from for decades now by wide margins (generally between 60-80% depending on the specifics of such a conflict).
This is probably why Trump’s defense agreement is in the form of a Executive Order rather than a formal treaty: Trump knows that Congress would absolutely reject such a proposed treaty, and conveniently, it gives him the power to rescind the agreement unilaterally should the Qataris not continue to enrich and flatter him and his Regime.
Many will have heard something about the Qatari ‘donation’ (really an unconstitutional emolument) of a customized jumbo jet to become the new ‘Air Farce One‘ (at an estimated cost of billion dollars to US taxpayers) that will be ‘donated’ to Trump’s Presidential Library after his term. But there are many far-reaching ties between Trump and his cronies and the Qataris.
Donald Trump and multiple associates in his oligarchic Regime have established significant financial and business ties with Qatar, involving direct investments, real estate deals, luxury gifts, and advisory work. These connections raise serious questions about potential conflicts of interest in the relationship with Qatar, especially as many dealings intensified during or after his presidential terms.
Trump Organization Deals with Qatar
- In 2025, the Trump Organization finalized an agreement to build a luxury golf resort and Trump-branded villas north of Doha, in partnership with Qatari Diar, a real estate firm owned by Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, and the Saudi company Dar Global.
- The Trump Organization announced the deal just ahead of major U.S.-Qatar bilateral summits, reflecting the intersection of Trump’s business interests and his presidential influence.
- During his trips to the region as president, Trump also negotiated multi-billion dollar business and government agreements, such as the 2025 pact with Qatar for economic exchange worth $1.2 trillion, including large Boeing and GE sales to Qatar Airways.
High-Value Gifts and Direct Payments
- The Qatari royal family gifted a luxury Boeing 747-8 aircraft worth $400 million to the U.S. for temporary use as Air Force One, a move widely criticized for potential implications of foreign influence at the highest levels of U.S. government.
- During Trump’s earlier term, the Qatari government and members of its royal family spent hundreds of thousands on Trump-owned properties, including his D.C. hotel and Trump World Tower, while a Qatari-backed firm provided financial assistance to a troubled Kushner family real estate venture.
Ties of Trump Associates and Administration Figures
- Jared Kushner’s private equity firm, started after leaving the Trump White House, has received investments from Gulf wealth funds, including Qatar’s.
- Pam Bondi, who served as a Trump adviser, was paid to lobby on behalf of Qatari interests.
- Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, previously worked for a lobbying firm that represented Qatar’s embassy.
- At least six Trump officials, including Trump himself, have documented business ties to Qatar.
Related Influence and Ethical Concerns
- Trump family business activity in the Gulf has tripled, with numerous licensing and development deals overlapping with diplomatic initiatives.
- Ethics watchdog groups have raised concerns about ongoing foreign deals possibly benefiting Trump personally during periods when he has the power to influence U.S. policy toward those foreign partners.
Media Investments
- A Qatari royal invested about $50 million in Newsmax, a U.S. conservative media outlet favorable to Trump, as part of wider Qatari strategies to build influence in key circles.
Overall, Trump and several close advisers have longstanding, multi-layered financial ties to Qatar, involving direct payments, business partnerships, and lobbying work, often coinciding with policy or diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Qatar during and after his terms in office. And these ties are just what is currently known from open sources. I would not be surprised if there are many more ways Trump is being enriched secretly. This entanglement and enrichment of Trump and his Regime will likely only grow more extensive over the coming years.
How do you feel about Trump’s prostitution of America’s national security and military to the highest bidders?
