Media fact-checkers wore themselves out spotting Donald Trump’s falsehoods in his rant-filled State of the Union address Tuesday night, while analysts found little of substance. “This Week in Trumpland” newsletter writer Adam Gabbett of The Guardian, said “The president lurched from lies about the economy to misinformation about the cost of living, interspersed with some gratuitous xenophobia about Somalis in Minnesota.” David Frum of The Atlantic said, “President Trump’s State of the Union address last night was very like the man who delivered it: divisive, abusive, and childish.”[https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/02/trumps-childish-state-of-the-union/686133]
But Republican Congressman Juan Ciscomani had a different take in a late-night Facebook post: “Great message tonight by President Trump.” Let’s examine the congressman’s reasoning, though:
- “He told the story of the State of our Union through the people of our nation.” Leaving out though, the Trump administration’s frantic attempts to erase Black and Native American mentions from national historic sites. Worse, the officially condoned terrorizing of minority communities in the name of immigration “reform.” Renee Good and Alex Pretti, killed by the out-of-control Border Patrol that Ciscomani loves so much, were White American citizens whose deaths tell a story, all right.
- “The President also talked about the many accomplishments and progress we have made in just one year.” Costs of everyday household needs have not subsided, the government’s own numbers show an abysmal record of new job creation in 2025, and the Standard and Poors 500 stock index has risen only two-thirds of a percent this year. Trump’s tariff tantrums have created a sense of unease in the American and international business communities that has hindered new investment.
- “The American people are resilient, determined and full of hope.” A Gallup poll just two weeks ago found “Americans’ hope for their future has fallen to a new low.” [https://apnews.com/article/poll-gallup-optimism-future-republicans-democrats-4dc287cdbbaefb077895746613fea4e4
Economist Jared Berstein points out that “The bad news (from the real ‘State of the Union’ described by Gallup) is that Trump and Rs have nothing to offer in this space, as the president showed last night.” [https://econjared.substack.com/p/you-wont-learn-anything-about-the]
Pollster G. Elliot Morris’ latest dive into Americans’ opinions “finds the president at his lowest point on virtually every metric. Trump’s overall job approval has fallen to net -22, and he’s now underwater or tied on every single issue we track, including border security, which had been his last remaining bright spot. Democrats have opened a 10-point lead on the generic congressional ballot, the widest we’ve recorded.” [https://www.gelliottmorris.com/p/ahead-of-state-of-the-union-address]
Juan Ciscomani should have abandoned the company of cheering Republican congressional sycophants Tuesday night and joined the determinedly stoic Democrats in his seat. Not to show his displeasure to the president he so slavishly follows, of course, but to go into hiding.
