Last night, President Donald Trump delivered a grandiose, gaslighting State of the Union, a record 108-minute sewer of self-praise and distortion. But Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, in her blistering Democratic response, laid bare what millions of Americans already know: Trump’s claims of prosperity are a fantasy built on skyrocketing costs, manufactured fear, and unchecked self-enrichment.
Tariffs and Inflation
Trump wants you to believe America is booming. “Every day, Americans are paying the price,” the governor said. “Meanwhile, the President is planning for new tariffs. Another massive tax hike on you and your family.”
“You fat, sorry sack of shit, people hate you!” James Carville said separately about Trump on his podcast.
As Spanberger pointed out with unflinching clarity, Trump’s reckless trade policies — especially his tariffs — have slammed ordinary households with more than $1,700 in hidden costs per family this past year alone.
Small businesses are bleeding, farmers have lost entire markets, and essential goods cost more because of his economic brinkmanship. And now, even though the Supreme Court threw out these tariffs, the damage is already done.
Meanwhile, Trump is plotting new tariffs — another tax hike on you and your Arizona neighbors — while Republicans in Congress stand by like silent accomplices.
Healthcare in Crisis, Yet Trump Celebrates It
Rural health clinics are closing their doors — not despite Trump’s leadership, but because of it.
Trump’s Big Bad Bill is “The one threatening rural hospitals, stripping healthcare from millions of Americans, and driving up costs in energy and housing,” Spanberger said. “All while cutting food programs for hungry kids.”
Trump and GOP lawmakers are pushing policies that strip healthcare access from millions, drive up costs for energy and housing, and cut food assistance for hungry kids, even as the President bizarrely celebrates these outcomes in his speeches.

Trump and his allies in Congress “are making your life harder. They’re making your life more expensive. They’re even making it more difficult to see a doctor.
Masked Men, Chaos, and Broken Safety Claims
Trump claims he’s kept Americans safe. But not for Americans.
Spanberger’s response revealed that Trump’s unaccountable, poorly trained federal agents have murdered U.S. citizens, ripped nursing mothers from their children, and sent minors to remote detention centers.
These are not isolated incidents — they’re a pattern of using federal power to sow fear while real crime goes uninvestigated. ICE is the opposite of safety.
Corruption and Self-Enrichment at the Expense of the Nation
Perhaps the sharpest indictment of all: Trump is governing to make himself richer, not ordinary Americans.
Spanberger named corporate cronies, crypto scams, Epstein file cover-ups, and billionaire galas — all while the American people foot the bill. The scale of corruption, she said, is unprecedented.
Trump has established a kleptocracy with a presidential seal.

Arizona is Ground Zero for Trump’s Failures
Arizonans know real hardship: rising housing costs, strained healthcare, supply chain pressures on grocery prices, and border chaos. Trump’s messaging says one thing, but everyday experience says another:
- Inflation still bites — Trump’s imaginary “success” can’t put money back in your pocket.
- Healthcare deserts are expanding as rural clinics shutter.
- Immigration enforcement is chaos, not safety.
- Federal power is being used to bully and terrorize, not protect.
Spanberger’s message wasn’t just a rebuttal — it was a mirror. And what it reflected is worrying: Trump’s State of the Union painted a golden façade over an economy and society that are crumbling for the middle and working classes.
Make a difference in November
For Arizona, Spanberger’s message lands amid a high-stakes election cycle and a fragile economy. Families here are wrestling with stubborn prices, from Phoenix’s housing market to grocery aisles in small towns. Rural residents see hospitals and clinics under strain. Border communities navigate both security concerns and the human toll of chaotic enforcement.
“Democrats across the country are laser-focused on affordability — in our nation’s capital and in state capitals and communities across America,” Spanberger said. “
Voters must ask themselves: Do we accept more preposterous speeches and less real progress — or do we want Democratic candidates who actually work for ordinary Americans?

“Because ‘We the people’ have the power to make change, the power to stand up for what is right, and the power to demand more of our nation,” she said.
