Tucson Meet Yourself Reconnect on Oct. 8 to 10, 2021

It’s back: Tucson Meet Yourself had to cancel in-person festivities last year due to the ongoing pandemic, but it’s time to “reconnect” in 2021 at Jacome Plaza downtown, outside of the Joel D. Valdez main library, 101 N. Stone Ave.   Entertainment planned for all 3 days, October 8 to 10, 2021.

Performances from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, plus food booths, folk art activities, etc.  There will be 2 stages called Church Stage (on Church Avenue) and Lawn Stage (on the southside of Jacome Plaza, near Pennington St.)

Schedule here (subject to change, so check back):

And if you’re like me, heading down there (fully vaccinated, with my mask) to check out the food options, here’s the map for the vendors:

  1. Day 3, last day at TMY Reconnect. So started off early with my comfort food, delicious Japanese gyoza (pork dumplings) and onigiri (aka musubi rice ball with tuna inside) from the Takoyaki food truck. Listened to Moroccan music from Azure, then lively Tejano music by Suerte Musical, followed by Western swing. and finally old time music with Dan Levenson, on the fiddle & banjo, accompanied by a guitarist and bass celloist. That’s all folks till next October. (Went to Mercado Flea Market earlier, so that’s why I stopped in mid-afternoon). TMY Goes to 6 p.m. tonight.

  2. Day 2 of TMY Reconnect and a long day it was. Started off with Chinese songs & a lion dance, then the new UA Gem & Mineral Museum in former Pima County Courthouse. Your eyes will be dazzled by their collection. Then Bulgarin music by Ludo Djore, followed by Caribbean/Latin music by Grupo Riken. Enjoyed new dances by my favorite Suzuyuki-Kai Japanese dancers, then oddly enough Irish dancing prior to taiko drumming by Odaiko Sonora. Music ongoing to 10 p.m. tonight, but 11 to 6 p.m. was way too much for me, since I’m going again tomorrow. What did I eat: Egyptian dessert (basbousa), and Jamaican jerk chicken by Pam’s Kitchen at F12. It was terrific (came with rice/beans/salad), and no long line.

  3. Woohoo Day 1 of this Reconnect TMY. Hundreds of people there, about half were masked, and very eager to enjoy the music, eat the ethnic foods, etc. I folded a golden origami crane at Chi Nakano’s folk arts talking tent, which I then took over to the Loss & Remembrance booth, in memory of the friends I lost during the pandemic (two good friends, plus three others). Listened to West African drums by Tariq Rasool & the Songhai drummers, then the Old Pueblo Bluegrass Band, followed by Peruvian songs by Tradiciones. Lastly I watched my own culture: Hawaiian/Samoan/Tahitian dancers spread a little aloha to the crowd. What a first night, two more days this weekend. Lots of folks got there using free Sun Link Streetcar from both directions.
