One term Ward 3 Councilman Democrat Paul Durham resigned today, effective in a month. He was elected in Nov. 2017 and had served as Chief of Staff for Ward 6 Coucilmember Nina Trasoff. The Tucson City Council will now name his replacement, who must live in Ward 3. Durham cited “personal reasons” for his resignation (letter copied on the bottom in its entirely).
Recently, Councilman Durham has some personal health issues from a fall (broken ribs), as well as assisting in the care of his husband Philippe, who has cancer. Good luck to both of them.
Durham defeated Independent political newcomer Gary Watson in the General Election 2017 (58.82% to 40.27%). No Republican ran in that race. He had defeated Democratic political newcomers Felicia Chew and Tom Tronsdal in the August primary of 2017.
The last time the Tucson City Council named a successor Councilmember was in May, 2010 when they appointed Paul Cunningham to the vacant Ward 2 seat.
Durham would have been up for re-election in Nov. 2021, along with incumbent Democrats in Ward 5 (Richard Fimbres) and Ward 6 (Steve Kozachik).
